This morning a friend of mine was pulling my boat from my house across town to his house. While driving out of our neighborhood someone backed up out of their parking space and clipped his car and completely smashed the front end of my boat.. It is an older '85 model Dixie Craft, same thing as a mastercraft powerslot but with an open bow. Anyways has anyone had a situation similar to this one and are there certain things to watch out for when dealing with insurance companies and boats? Also I had just pulled the carpet out and interior to be linexed and re-upholstered. Therefore it looks like poop on the inside...even if I have all of the old seats and carpet that I ripped out will I have trouble with the insurance company about the condition of the boat? Any help would be appreciated as this is my first time dealing with this kind of situation with a boat or car. Thanks, Sam

Sounds to me like you have a rare antique ski boat that was being restored to mint condition!! Seriously, do you want to fix the boat? If so get a quote for the glass work before you even talk with insurance guy--boat repair ain't cheap.

They will most likly "TOTAL" the boat and give you value of the boat. Tell them you would like to keep the boat. They will give you a check then let you buy back the boat cheap. Make sure the difference is enough to repair the boat. They will also offer you next to nothing for the trailer tell them you want to keep it. Good Luck

Not that I am an insurance expert but I think what will happen is they will get an estimate of the cost to repair and the value of the boat and pay whichever is less. That is of course unless they have Allsnake in which case they will deny the claim for some bogus reason and then cancel the insured's coverage.

Many Marine insurance policys are based on an agreed value. (A dollar amount agreed upon at the beginning of the policy). Although these policys are more expensive, and most carry a higher deductable, you will know ahead of time what money you would recieve in the event of a total loss. I have seen many boat owners come out short handed because they did not insure the vessel properly. (Not saying you did or did'nt) Hope you come out o.k.

The measure of damages is the difference in the value of the boat prior to the accident and the value of the boat after the accident.

I had several customers who had an event like this occur over the years. I believe that, when being pulled on the highway, the insurance of the tow car covers the boat - not the boat insurance. The driver of the towcar may also have an umbrella that would also cover. The insurance company of the tow car, the insurance co of the other car and the boat insurance co will have a ball settling this one! I would definately make a case for this being an antique boat (get some values from the NADA and from BoatTraderOnline.com to substantiate your position)
