The central unit on our houseboat has died. After 21 years I guess its time. I have an option of a new conventional heat pump for $1500. However I am intrigued by the concept of a marine air unit that might run off the inverter. What experience has anyone on the forum had with these marine air units, their ability to cool, and if there is one that can handle the 6000 cubic foot cabin?

I have a houseboat with an inverter, but the possibility of an inverter running an A/C in my opinion is not at all practical. Mine would run a small frig and would keep the ice maker cold but making ice would kill the battery, and that was running at 2000 rpm.

My inverter will run fans, lights, refrigerator, and the TVs as well as making coffee in the mornings. With my normal setup the 6 golf cart batteries will keep us going between 10 and 12 hours. I guess my big question is if marine air is efficient enough to keep the cabin cool. If it will run off the inverer that's great. If not I just want to make sure it keeps us comfortable when at the dock or with the generator running.
