I have a family house on Brushy Creek and when I went there yesterday I was shocked at how muddy the water was. I realize we had a lot of rain lately and runoff would effect water clearity, but as muddy as the water is I wonder if there is some environmental issue starting. The water around Duncan Bridge looked great in comparison. I would hope the lake patrol Alabama Power utilitizes would be on top of any environmental problem that is starting to surface. Anyone have thoughts on this?

I wouldn't worry about it Ricky.

Just all the rain.

I too have a home on Brushy Creek. The water has been muddy for nearly two weeks and not getting any better. Any idea where this is coming from?

It's called rain. If you will notice the lake is almost 10 feet high for this time of year. AP is trying to get it down under 500 but it keeps raining every few days.

Rain doesn't create muddy conditions in large areas such as a lake; failure to control sediment runoff from development does. If this hasn't been a problem in the past following rainfall, then I would bet someone has cleared property and has not properly maintained the runoff of sediment into nearby streams that then feed your part of the lake. I realize that the restrictions on this are not that strong in the area, but if we take this lightly as suggested here, then it will only get worse. I would suggest that you identify and streams and check them during the next rainfall. If you find one running particularly dirty, follow it upstream until you find your culprit. Not sure what you can do about it at that point, but may be worth reporting. We have a house on Smith, but live in Georgia; here we would report it to either the local authorities or to the Corp.

I would call SLISA and see what they can do about this issue, since they're so concerned about water level and quality.

You thinking parallels mine. I also believe the excessive muddiness is caused by a large construction site or maybe a logging operation. Last Saturday I did drive North from Arley looking at several locations on the lake and they were all muddy. Maybe I should have looked further. The problem is there, I know it is. I would have dismissed the muddy water in Brushy Creek and attributed it to the rain if the water at Duncan Bridge was also muddy. There is a lot talk about a strip mining operation opening up somewhere on Brushy Creek or one it tributaties. Maybe its operation has already started. The quickest way to find the source of the polution is a 15 minute arial survey.

The upper 10 miles of each finger of the lake always gets muddy after a large rain. It has done this as long as I have lived here, almost 40 years.
There are so many run ins on the lake it gets muddy and sticks, logs and other trash cover the lake.

I'm on Brushy, approximately 1 mile above Yellow Creek. Have been here 5 years. Never seen it like this. I first assumed it was rain but it's not clearing up at all. Haven't been out in the boat during the rain. But, about a mile upstream from me, on the east side, atop a high bluff, a developer has cleared a large tract. I don't recall when this occurred. It wasn't recently - possibly it was in 2007. I don't know if this is the source of the sediment or not.

Ivan just does not change over time - never deals in facts. If we look at the plot of water level versus time, there might be an explanation of what's happening to muddy the water and cause for debris all over the lake.

From 6/15/09 through 9/18/09, there was a very smooth letdown of water level. The level changed from 510 to 503.5. During this period, rain fall rates were also high and variable

From Sept 18 through Dec. 26, this lake has been in turmoil. Rain causes the lake to go up at accelerated rates. What causes the level to go down at accelerated rates? APC is the sole controller of how fast the lake level drops in short periods of time.

9/18 503.5 feet
9/27 509 feet
10/13 510 feet
10/15 512.7 feet
12/5 504 feet
12/9 508.9 feet
12/26 505 feet

Is the water muddy all over the lake?

I live above the Houston/Arley Bridge and there is logging going upstream from me. I can hear the equipment, good point about the runoff I will do some checking around.

I was starting to think I was about the only person wondering why the water on Brushy Creek was so muddy for so long. We have a beautiful, clear lake and I don't want anything to happen to it because of something somebody should have or shouldn't have done. Once a problem starts it's just about impossible to stop or reverse it. Not sure if I can do this, but on the 6th of January 2010 at 06:30 there will be a meeting in the Cullman County Courthouse concerning the proposed strip mine in Brushy Pond. I for one will attend the meeting and voice my opinion against the mine opening.

We tested water yesterday afternoon and reported the data to Alabama Water Watch, making note of the water conditions. If anyone on Brushy the upper part notices any road construction, logging, or anything else that could cause point source pollution let me know and I will follow up on it. I would be cutior to know how the condtion of the water is up around the 278 Bridge crossing Brushy

I spoke with someone who lives a couple of miles up Brushy from me. The water is clear up there they came by yesterday and could not believe to condition of the water here. We will ride up the lake tomorrow and look for a source. Hope its nothing but we are following up on it.

We Discovered the source of the muddy water yesterday. Kinda hard to fathom but about 1 mile above Bankhead Paradise there is what appears to be the bottom of the lake floating in large chunks, let me explain before you think I'm nuts. When the water drops each yeard leaves fallon the bank they are covered with water when the lake comes up then silt settles on top of this and the next fall the process is repeated. As the organic matter decays it creates methane gas. Well there are numerous
"floating islands" of this debris some are about 3 to 4 feet thick and up to approx 100 sq ft of surface area this and the silt is leaching out of these "islands". Never seen this before I will talk with Alabama water watch and see if they know anything about this phenomina.

Yes, the pictures are fine. Water still looks really muddy. What is floating on the surface? There was a lot of normal floatsum around my dock, but it was just small limbs and leaves which is entirely normal after a heavy rain and rapid lake rise. Thank you for the pictures again and dont forget to attend the public meeting about the proposed strip mine around Brushy Pond in the Cullman county court house on Jan 4th at 06:30.

That could very well be whats causing the persistant muddy water on Brushy Creek. If I had to make a choise, I would rather have this kind of natural mud production than a man made source. There would have to be a lot of these floating islands in the area. There are many such "floating islands" in the Neitherlands composed of many, many meters deep of peat moss. When you walk on these areas your steps are springy and it's pleasant to walk on. Now thats weird. Thank you sir for looking.

Thanks for the insight there are numerous "islands" we could have beached the pontoon boat on one of them.

It looks like many years of leaves and silt accumulation that has entrained enough methane to cause it to break loose from the bottom and float up

So do these floating "islands" have to be removed or do they dissolve naturally? I have never seen any thing like this before, so I really don't know anything about them. Also, it looks like these could heavily damage a normal deck or wake boat if hit. Just a little concerned.

What does this have to do about calling SLISA to look into violations of construction runoff?

Wow! That is pretty interesting; you wouldn't catch me walking on one though. It would make sense that those could cause a discoloration in the water and if they are there for an extended period it would explain why it isn't going away. Having never seen one of those before, I would have no idea how many of them and how long they would have to be there to cause an issue in the water. Hopefully, you can get some feedback from an expert in the area. As for the Strip Mine Meeting, my neighbor is going and I have submitted the "protest post card" that was delivered to our house. Please join in and voice your opinion.

The meeting was Monday night at 06:30. You missed getting a lot of information about the proposed strip mine. I thought there was really a good turnout for the meeting. Only one lonely person voiced his opinion for the mine. Well, his opinion is his perogative.

Yes, I went to the meeting and it was well attended. There was a very strong setiment against the mine. If the political officials there made their decisions on what was presented they have to not approve the permit. I thought the folks who presented out side did an outstanding job.
