I applaud this group for the many comments on identifying sources for muddy water and the attempts to explain why they are localized. Concurrently, I also applaud the interest of many who want to protect our beautiful body of water from strip mining. The bottom line is we are all interested in protecting Smith Lake from any outside interest that would impact water quality, pollution, etc. Great! We want Smith Lake to stay safe for our children and grandchildren.
Allow me to interject that there are other pollution sources on Smith lake other than muddy water and strip mining. What about thermal pollution - not on the lake side but below the dam from Gorgas. What about past comments from forum members that APC owns Smith Lake and they can do whatever they want. If it was disclosed that coal from the strip mining project was to be purchased by APC, what would your comments be? Would APC also be called "greedy"?
Go one step further. Since we're talking about the health of Smith Lake, what would be current comments as to the impact on sediment, aquatic life, safety (from hitting partially submerged stumps while tubing), etc. from the dramatic shifts in water level (510 to 496). Is this now OK even though when these shifts are preventable via the addition of cooling towers at Gorgas.
I can already hear comments that waterph is back on his stump about water level control. Believe me, I am proud that no one has mentioned seasonal lots and developers during these discussion of late. Everyone is concerned about Smith Lake as a total and not being sidetracked. So am I. I just wish that we could come together and discuss what's good for Smith Lake and leave the politics out. If APC's current water usage program from Smith Lake needs to be challenged, treat them like the strip mining company is being treated.

How? I would love to affect the changes that you recomend. However Mr. Big Business wants no changes that hurt his bottom line. It would be nice if we could talk with our money but there is no competition with electric utilities.

Very well stated; I believe what may exist here is similar to the old story regarding the frog and hot water. You know the one: drop a frog in hot water and he will jump out (Strip Mining), slowly turn up the temperature and he will boil (lake level). Is it that folks have just been dealing with this for so long that they have given up the idea of it ever changing?
