Just getting set up with internet at the lake. I am thinking about bpl(broadband over powerlines). Do any of you guys use this service. I am not sure I want satalite so I am looking into bpl. Hoping for feedback. Thanks.

I use BPL through Cullman Electric Co-op. It is $30 per month. It is not very fast but it is faster than dial up and frees up the phone line. Eventually faster speeds will be available (for a higher cost per month). I use the BPL modem with a wireless router and it works fine...for weekend service.

Hey Recluse, I just moved to the lake full time and also signed up for the BPL through Cullman Electric. Definitely not as fast as the cable internet I've enjoyed for over ten years, but it does beat dialup. My neighbors use the satelite service and they're always complaining about using up their bandwidth everyday, and then how slow it becomes afterwards. Their main complaint is that they're allocated so much bandwidth per day, and then it resorts to a very slow speed, but on the days they're not around, that bandwidth is lost.... So eventhough they might be away from home for a couple of weeks a month, those days are gone forever... In other words, it's like cellular service and "Rollover" minutes... Satelite service DOES NOT have "ROLLOVER" bandwidth so eventhough you might not use the total allocated per month, it's still allocated on a per-day basis. Hope that helps.... I did ask the BPL people when they expect the faster service to become available, and I didn't get a straight answer. Basically, they don't know.

Thank you both. BPL is the way I am going. We are up at the lake 3 days per week now and over the next 3-4 years hope to make it 5 days per week. Belated happy thanksgiving to you and thanks again.

I Do not Have IBPL acessiblilty So I went with Hughes Net.
There is a deal through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to subsidize Internet, the plan is 39.00 month with free basic install an no contract. The Bandwith allotment can be a pain but they have a download manger that you can utilize to download large files between 1 am and 6am and not affect your "Daily Allotment" For now it is a good thing.

At our place near Duncan Bridge, we have excellent 3G service / signal with Verizon; thus, we use that connection from our smartphones.

Initially, we "tethered" with a Blackberry by physically connecting it to our laptop by USB cable. Connection speeds were comparable to medium DSL and I paid an add'l $15 / month for that feature to Verizon.

Last spring, I bought a Palm phone that includes a built-in mobile wifi application; Verizon was discounting these phones heavily and offering that mobile wifi feature for free. You can connect up to 5 wifi-enabled devices at a time via the phone's 3G connection. With it, our laptop typically connects with download speeds of approx. 1.2 - 1.8 mbps.
