For all those wind and solar fans ... one modern nuclear reactor generates more electricity in "one week" than all current solar and wind farm installations combined can generate in a 10 year period of time.

Hmmm ... lets throw out nuclear along with oil and get behind solar and wind.

The envirnmentalists do not want drilling because it may impact the natural envirornment for animals, but they will accept massive wind farms and solar farms that just blanket the land, are ugly and far less efficient.

I still believe that we could explore nuclear power more than we have. Overall, I believe it is safe. It may not be a good option for California on the San Andreas fault, but other places don't pose a problem. In fact, I think I saw on the news last night that we have a few nuclear power plants, but I missed where they are. I think there is room for different options for different purposes. We should explore them all, with the objective to reduce our oil addiction.

I completely agree that we need to move forward with more nuclear power but we need to learn all we can from what is going on in Japan.

Hound, you mentioned not wanting them in California because of earthquakes.  First of all that really applies to the entire west coast as it is all along a subduction zone.  Secondly, probably the biggest earthquake threat from a severity standpoint is actually in the middle part of the country with the New Madrid Fault Zone (centered in Missouri).  The west coast has the frequency of earthquakes as well as intensity but New Madrid will have the intensity, maybe not like Japan, but still very strong.  The last major event was in 1811-1812 and was a series of earthquakes registering 7-8 on the Richter scale.  Made the Mississippi River reverse its course.

Anyway, enough of the geology lesson but we definitely need to promote the use of nuclear power.

That's interesting about the mid-West. Didn't realize we had a major fault line there too.
