As we are approaching the one year anniv of the BP well blow out in the Gulf, a Q for you guys: since both of you seemed to have the best "boots on the ground" perspective on conditions down there, how are things today? Be interested in your observations.

MM may have more actual facts than I have, but when did discussions have to have facts?  We will be going down next weekend, as our snowbirds leave this Sunday.  They have been there since January 1.  The only new info I have comes from the banter back and forth from Gulf Shores forum, and Mobile Press Register articles.  The rental agencies and Chamber all say "Everything is great" while some remain skeptical.

I was VERY concerned about the big glob they discovered recently, but I understand that was something that came down the Mississippi.  Hopefully, it was not oil related and will not be a problem.  I have heard the dead dolphins speak volumes about the condition, and I have heard that the dolphin stores are way overblown.  Who knows?

I will closely investigate our little portion of the beach to see.  One thing that has always amazed me down there is the movement of the sand.  The landscape changes daily based on blown sand.  Do I think the beaches will look great? Absolutely.  Do I think the BP folks got all the little oil particles removed?  Absolutely not.  Do I still think the Louisiana and Mississippi marshes have some years for recovery?  Yes.  Will I enjoy some seafood on our next trip down? Absolutely.  Is our condo for rent this summer?  Better hurry, prime days are filling fast.

We went on our annual vacation to Orange Beach last October.  There were brand new John Deere tractors pulling trailers full of Tyvek clad workers on facing benches.  Their little parade was followed by another brand new John Deere tractor pulling a trailer with a porta-potty thereon.  This was followed by a another brand new John Deere tractor with some sort of belt like sand scraper-sifter.

Those folks spent the day scraping, sifting, and mildewing around on the beach, really doing… nothing… but putting uncover trash etc. into their garbage bags.  The media was not present to report on the expensive dawdling on the beach.  What a waste!

The corporate colors of John Deere and BP are so similar; you would think they are related.

Beaches are open and beautiful. Recent release came from another well that was being capped but hit in Louisiana. There is no discernible, visually obvious oil on the beaches except the occasional tar ball. BP stopped their beach combing crews because they were a waste of time and money. As for long-term effects on flora and fauna, BP is spending tens of millions to study it, NOAA and other federal and state agencies are spending millions of dollars to study it........results and fighting to continue for years. Go enjoy the beach, eat the shrimp and oysters and wear lots of sun screen because that is the biggest health risk you will encounter in the gulf......except the drive to get there......

Thanks to both for your update. Clearly, this has been out of the news for a while, which indicates not much going on down there. Haven't been to the beach in several years - have a hard time dragging myself away form the lake! Need to make a run down there and enjoy the sun, surf and food.
