TALLAPOOSA IS BELIEVED TO MEAN "PULVERIZED ROCK" IN THE CHOCTAW INDIAN LANGUAGE. BY THE WAY DADEVILLE WAS NAMED AFTER MAJOR FRANCIS LANGHORNE DADE, WHO DIED IN THE SEMINOLE WAR.

I "asked Jeeves" and got several answers, including golden water, golden river, swift current, stranger, and newcomer. My 4th grader's Ala history book says it comes from the Choctaw word "tali pushi", meaning "pulverized rock." Sounds to me like nobody knows.
More interesting to me is the origin of Sylacauga, from the Creek word "suli kagi" meaning "buzzard's roost." How appropriate!!

It means: "Take and give nothing in return". Yes, I recieved my tax bill yesterday too and, yes, it went up another $101. Now, I don't mind paying and getting something in return but, and this is a HUGE BUTT, what the county offers me is no better than when my taxes were 400% less. Ya gotta love government.
