winterizing boats

Question for the the "seasoned old sailors" on the board, just what does "winterizing" an outboard engine involve? Is it really necessary for one that is not in need of maintenance? The marinas seem to really push this, and it seems to me a little bit much. Any good info would be appreciated.

The marinas are trying to make a living. A outboard for the winter assuming the boat is out of water make sure the motor is tilted down for the water to drain. Thats it . Now you may want to check the grease in the lower unit . But I never do.

You can look at the 'winterization' thread on the Boat Maintenance Forum.
Generally speaking, if your outboard is a 2 stroke without an electronic ignition and you have a good water pump impeller and fuel filter, there's not much to be done. However, if you have a newer 4 stroke - fuel injected engine, you had better take care of the injectors and change the oil and oil filter or you are asking for trouble. In any event, the remaining fuel in your tank should be stabilized, your engine fogged, and the battery disconnected. Read your manuel de ownera! (Owner's Manual)
It's like anything else - maintain it properly and you won't have problems next summer. (Not replacing a worn water pump impeller can cost you dearly if your engine overheats out on the lake next summer and burns up before you notice the gauge! Even if you do notice the gauge, you will need to be towed in, find the part on a weekend and you'll be giving up an otherwise fun lake visit to repairing your engine!)
The newer engines have electronic control modules (ECM's) that control the distribution of spark and fuel in them. They can only be serviced properly by trained technicians with expensive diagnostic computers. If you have spent several weeks in school for that engine and have invested thousands in the diagnostic computer, then you can probably avoid paying a marina for their certified technician to work on your engine with the special tools and calibration equipment! The days of shadetree mechanics working on outboard engines are about gone!
