I visited a friend on Lake Oconee a few days ago. This is a very nice upscale lake in NE Georgia. We spent a few hours boating around, looking at the beautiful mansions that line the shore. At some point in "the tour" I realized the lovely homes and lawns WERE the scenery.....no chimney rock, no eagle nests, no unspoiled woods, no big open water or quiet sloughs with cabins perched on hills. Just wanted to say that I hope Lake Maritn can somehow maintain its natural beauty.

Lake Oconee is by Lake Sinclair, both are more or less fishing lakes as is West Point. Oconee and Sinclair have no more than 18 inches of water level variance year round, due to water being pumped from one to the other for power generation. Oconee is more prestiegious than Sinclair since Sinclair is older than Oconee. Both are not very deep with a lot of submurged timber. No comparison to Martin, for recreation..

You got it exactly right. My friends have a fabulous home with a golf course in a gated neighborhood but not enough water to swim off their dock ....even in the summer! I liked it. But I did not love it. (by the way, we saw SNAKES sunning on the docks!!! Is that allowed in the covenants and restrictions???)

How do you expect it to do that when so much of the fabulous shoreline has been desecrated in just the last few years? Yeah...everyone's gonna say that such-and-such percent is still untouched, but at the rate it's going it won't take a decade to become just another watering hole for the rich. The point of disgust for the whole lake isn't far away. But, that also depends upon your perspective. Just got here? Yeah....it's a dreamland. Been here for decades? Going down the tubes fast.

I discovered Lake Martin over 25 years ago, and still love it. I agree, things are changing and it does depend on your perspective. I for one enjoy the growth and the diversity it brings to the lake and the economy. We have more choices in restaurants, shopping, and even friendly people to relax and have fun with.

That being said, I would guess I’m not alone in becoming tired of your often negative attitude….. which seems to imply that everyone should enjoy the lake your way, or no way. If all you can do is whine about change, jet ski’s, wakeboard boats, and more, maybe you should consider going someplace less stressful to your fragile sole; or just accept the privilege of our lake and free economy, and enjoy what we all have available to us in this great country. Have a nice day.

Yes, we are new to the lake. We think it is heavenly. We have no way of knowing what it was like years ago. It sems just about perfect now.

Excuse me for not always being positive...but it is not always positive. What Russell has done in their "development" of the lake is not all positive so don't begrudge my realistic attitude. "Progress" in an environment such as this is more often negative. Sorry...even your rose colored glasses can't argue with that.

That being said.....I have been here for over 35 years and will be here until the eternal celestial dirt nap. But, as I'm being lowered into the pit I will always be sure that the more natural the lake environment is, the more appealing it is. Turn it into another downtown Montgomery or Atlanta where money is the object and then it turns into just another watering hole. Remember the reason for it's appeal. Just respect that. Don't ignore it.

"'Growth' and 'progress' are among the key words in our national vocabulary. But modern man now carries Strontium 90 in his bones ... DDT in his fat, asbestos in his lungs. A little more of this 'progress' and 'growth,' and this man will be dead."-- Sen. Morris Udall

Absolutely correct Happy. Have been to Oconee many times and it just doesn't have the rustic appeal of Lake Martin. Also, because it is fairly shallow, any rain and the water turns red. If you go to the lake for the country club life, I guess Oconee is the place to be. I prefer to keep my golf separate from my lake activities.
