Who is in charge of authorizing NO WAKE signs on Lake Martin and who places them? Today heading north on 49 I noticed several NO WAKE signs have been placed in front of the cove restaurant. There are more signs there then in front of the marinas on the south side of Blue creek. How can this be? Can I get a bunch of signs in my cove?

The Marine Police aprrove Idle Speed, or no wake, areas. Once approved then the individual or business is responsible for putting the buoys out and maintaining them. It is illegal to put out regulatory buoys (idle speed, boats keep out) without approval.
The criteria for approval are more strict now than years ago. As a general rule residential sloughs do not meet the criteria.

Good luck trying to get the OK for a NO WAKE sign, the marine police told us directly, that unless you KNOW someone in the state government it is just about impossible to get one put out...

So this means that the Marine Police approved the signs in front of the Cove? What is the process to obtain approval?

My neighbor has a red round buoy in front of his place,..... I know I'm fixin' to take a beating,.......but what does this one mean? We're not in a narrow slough or cove, we're in open water. There's no sand bar or hazzard either. I noticed there were two last year, one in front of his place and the other one was more in front of us. But I noticed this week, the one in front of our place is gone. I was just wondering, I thought it was sorta odd.

You can call the Marine Police and they can tell you who to write in Montgomery to fill out a permit request.

Call our office at 1-800-432-7389 and give us a location. We'll come look at the area and let you know whether or not an ideal speed zone is merited. Generally it has to be a public access area (boat launch, swimming, etc.), gas docks, commercial boat slips (marinas, restaraunts), or a HIGH traffic area. As I said before residential sloughs do not meet the requirements.

Fulltimer, I've never seen "no wake" signs. I've seen "no wake" buoys in sloughs and other areas. Last season The Cove used red swim balls to mark the area where they parked their jet ski rentals. Is this what you mean?

Marine Police ,
Thanks for the answers. I am at a loss however to understand how a floating dock in front of a restaraunt would need more protecting than one in front of a house.

Why would you want a NO WAY buoy in a residential slough for one thing it is very dangerous esp. at night .
If you are worried about the waves tie your boat where it will not hit the pier. We don't need an obstacle course out there.

There are times I wish we had them in our slough but realize the danger at night. You are indeed quite correct.

If it's right in front of their place it may just be a mooring buoy for their PWCs. That's what a lot of our friends use rather than tying them up to the dock.

Maybe so, but they seem a little far to tie up a seadoo and swim in. The one in front of our place popped up again. Our neighbors were there last weekend, maybe they put it back or replaced it. Oh well,.... I just wondered. My kids have races out to it and back...unless traffic is heavy. Thanks though.
