Did anyone see the C-17 pass over on Saturday? It was about noon. It made a low level pass right over Maxwell and continued over Sandy Creek heading northeast and banked to the south. We were in the boat and they flew directly over us. What a beautiful sight.

I live in the home of the "Airborne" and I see C-17's pass low almost on a daily basis. Their patterns are so regular that I can tell whether or not they are doing Airborne operations or taking our fine soldiers to war. Everytime one flies in the deployment pattern I stop and quietly say a prayer for those on board. There is nothing like seeing some of our military aircraft.

I have never heard my husband refer to a C-17 as the budda but I have heard him refer to a C-5 (the biggest darn plane I have ever seen in my life) as the budda. The C-5 is so big that when they take off from here they can not have a full tank of fuel because the runway isn't long enough!

We live close to Maxwell/Gunter and have seen flybys several times, usually on holidays or weekends. Always figured it was by some poor guy having to work that day, but his friends/family were enjoying the lake at the rec area, so he buzzed them. Could be the Air Guard.

I flew on the old C-124 Globemaster. I left the service just as Travis recieved its first C-141.

My gosh, Lakeman. I hate to age you, but I rode on a 141 out of Saigon in 1969--that was a LOOOOOONG time ago.

Good point. I have two brother-in-laws, one active one retired. They call it the sound of freedom, tell me to appreciate it..........
|
They just retired the last C-141 this year. The Starlifter provided me with many fond memories as I've spent thousands of hours in the front of that tube heading to every corner of our planet.

JMSD...The C5

Curiously enough, the C5 never really had a name that stuck. The first "A" models that rolled off the line were called "The box that the 141's came in" and there have been local names but not a name that applied th o the fleet. The 5 is currently undergoing modifications to it's avionics and propulsion. The new engines (GE CF6's) will produce 22% greater thrust (Derated) 30% less take off roll & almost 60% less in time to climb. I think it can handle the shorter runways better now with cargo & fuel load
