Is there a specific provider that assures reception at the lake? I have Cingular (out of Birmingham) and I can't get any signal down past Blue Creek area. Could be it's just my phone, but it's only 18 months old (eons, technology-wise, I suppose). I saw on an old thread about Razor phones that someone had Cingular and had no problems with service.

My contract with Southern Linc is about to run out so I'll be trying out some new providers in an effort to locate something better. I'll let you know how I do.

Cingular and SPRINT - NO
Verizon - Yes
The above is my personal experience. Lesson Learned: They all claim to have service. Take your new phone/service to the Lake and try it before the three day cancellation period. This is hard for some of us out of State folks.
All can change based on which provider is willing to change locations of their towers.

T-Mobile works well in most areas

I agree. Verizon with a tri-mode phone (getting harder to fine) will get you coverage anywhere on the lake.....at least anywhere I have been.

We have Alltel (had Cingular but was roaming the whole time at the lake) and have had good luck with it. We have used it in the Dadeville area/Blue Creek just fine and now up around Willowpoint and doing fine there as well. We are not roaming anymore either.
Good luck finding one!

Tell me about the three day cancellation period. Is this a law or something that some/all providers do? I have asked several providers if I could take a phone home and try before I buy, but with no luck.

I talked to the manager at Radio Shack and he said you could try their providers out for 30days and only pay for your usage.

Found an interesteting article on Yahoo today regarding cell phone companies, coverage, etc. Here are a couple of excerpts:
Take a test drive: All the major carriers offer 30-day guarantees. If service is poor in your area, you can return the phone for a full refund. Beware, however, as some users have complained that these refunds can be difficult to obtain without a bit of a fight from the carrier. You could also consider renting a handset for a month or two to see how you like it.
Throw a party: My favorite tip. Want to know who has the best cellular service at your house? Throw a soiree and invite everyone you know. Make sure they bring their cell phone, and ask if you can give it a spin. Take notes on call quality for each carrier. Before the end of the evening you'll probably find a service that sounds good and a phone that you like, too. This doesn't help with service when you're away from your house, but knowing you can get a quality signal in every room in your house is worth a lot.

I use Cingular with great results until I head down Hwy 49 toward Tallassee from Dadeville. Past Hwy 50 all goes to h*ll until I am past Tallassee toward I-85. Maybe that's why Cingular does not market or sell in the Dadeville area. T-Mobile is the best for the Lake, I think.
