1. What was the original name of the Lay Dam project?
Lock #12. It was originally to be a lock on the Coosa. The Coosa was planned to be navigable all the way to Guntersville and the Tennessee River. That plan was only scrapped recently, hence one side of the Childersburg bridge being raised to heights to allow barge and tanker traffic. By the time the east bound lane was built the plan had been scrapped so the lower bridge was built.
2. What distinguished title does the Lay Dam have?
It was the first dam built by Alabama Power. It was actually permitted and engineered by someone else (senior moment on the name) who couldn't raise the funds to finish the project. In stepped Thomas Martin, who was doing the engineering work at Cherokee Heights for a hydro project himself. He formed The Alabama Power Company, finished the Lay Dam project, and the rest as they say is history.

I had wondered why the bridges were like that.

LTL passes on useless but helpful information.
When the last time you could say that OSMS?
Slanderous propaganda doesn't count.
