So I was in the Barbershop in Alex City today and overheard someone talking about the project and they said that the officials have reopened the site inquiry and are proposing the whole project be re-examined in light of the drought.

I mean...It sounds plausible...something that should be looked into...But then again so should the Alan R. Barton Nuke Site on the Coosa but something tells me people just won't approve.

I have heard rumors that the project has been brought off the 'back burner' also. I think it is great. From what I know the project is all but a done deal, if SOCO desides to do it. So if you haven't ever seen Horsehoe Bend Park, better get it on you list of things to do.

Alan Barton Nuclear site!! You must work for APCo or So Nuclear to remember that one.
That was what 30 years ago?

I don't work for either...I intend on working for So Nuclear next summer though. I'm currently a Nuclear Engineer in training (aka in School). Oh how cheap our power would be if Alan Barton had happened...(I have all the proposed new grid maps with the Alan Barton site wired in to the mainlines). Would've been one of the biggest if not the biggest site around. Something like 3800MWe proposed...something of that order. Palo Verde sized 4 reactor deal, talk about the nightmare it would be as far as flow requirements though.

As I recall from the maps I've seen the dam would be just UPriver from the battlefield...almost in view, just around the next bend at the horeshoe bluffs.

I haven't seen the maps and haven't even talked with anyone about it in years till yesterday. When I first heard of it years ago though, I was told it would flood the park, but he could have been mistaken. He is a SOCO employee but may have never seen the maps. He just knew it was proposed at the same time that Harris was I beleive. And then just yesterday I spoke with someone who ran into survey crews that told him that is what they were working on.

I thought the accumulation of the land and the subsequent donation for the Horseshoe Bend Park, prevented any future flooding of the area......in fact I think there is a plaque in the visitors center that mentions that issue. Has anyone else seen it there?

I haven't seen the plaque but I do have some experience with national historic sites. The old expression "it will take an act of congress" applies once something is placed on the national registery. If there is any validity at all to possible flooding of the site, I'm sure the issue will be complicated further by the political implications of exactly what the site means to our national history and the natives who inhabited it. I agree with ltl; you should see it if you haven't.

I am not sure rude. I was shocked when my freind told me about the plan. I even brought up the point of it being a national park, landmark, etc.etc. His response was if they decided to build it none of that mattered. He kinda laughed and said "ya think we've never flooded a historic landmark before, it's just a little tougher nowadays than it used to be". At this point however, I am willing to defer to the fellow that claims to have seen the maps. But the survey crew was working downstream from the park too, but that doesn't really mean anything. I am sure surveys would be done above and below the dam. I will say that the fellow that first told me of the project has NEVER given me anything but accurate info in regards to APCO/SOCO projects. He has been in charge of MANY of them.

But I will also say that no matter what the future of the park, if you haven't seen it, you should.
