I live down old CR 61 toward the old Yellow Creek Marina. I am told by the phone carrier that DSL is not available.

I am told by the cable people that there will never be cable available to me.

Are my only options "Dial up Modem" or the two way system via satellite or the "Hughes Net" internet.

This limits how long I can stay at the lake and I am looking for a solution.

Thanks,
DIM

Will a broadband cellular card work where you are? Some power companies are experimenting with a concept called broadband over power lines or BPL. I have Hughes Net near Rock Creek Marina and it is a lot faster than dial-up but slower than a cable modem. It was expensive to install because my wife made me put the giant dish at the end of our lot and I over ran the footage allowance for cable and had to pay extra. I may test one of those broadband cellular cards soon to see how the performance compares.

Hollywood,
I tried cellular and Knology's card worked some of the time and it was slow. I will look into broadband over power lines or BPL The two way where you use phone lines to kick in the satellite is okay but it ties up phone lines and is a little slower than cable modem.

Thanks for the reply and help!

I suppose you are in Winston County?

I don't know... Really though, Hughes net is not that expensive (as compared to prices for DSL or Cable)... they are discounting the equipment now.

But for those in Cullman County.. Cullman Electric is experimenting with Internet through the electrical lines which would be awesome. They use this in other parts of the country. You just plug into an outlet in any room you want.

You are right Winston County. I get my power from Cullman Electric. I wonder what their timing is and if it will be available to all their people?

Thanks for the reply..

Well, Cullman is advertising their BPL and the link is attached. They appear to be "deploying" and the Berlin substation (I have no idea where this is located) is where they are starting. Website also shows prices.
