Wow ... Obama now has his second scandal to deal with and he has note even taken office. Interesting that both involved a pay to play. Seems that is the democrats way.

Now congress is already getting a little uneasy about the chosen ones 900 billion stimulus plan.

Has anyone asked themselves where this money comes from? It is from outher contries that buy US treasuries. Now what happens if they start getting nervous about the US and start to pull out their money. First it would cause interest rates to sky rocket as treasury rates would start to go higher and higher looking for investors. Then when they couldn't find any and the US just printed dollars it would make the US dollar nearly worthless and inflation would go to levels unheard of in the US .... 200% or more.

Yes, if some of these foreign countries wanted to bring the US to their knees all they have to do is start pulling their money out of the US and we would have civil unrest that would probably destroy this country. The hope is that they know that would happen and need the US as a consuming country or it would impact the economies of the foreign country investors.

Could this be the "test" Obama will face that Biden spoke about? Did he see it coming and a possibility?

What you say is true. Heard the Republican minority leader saying that they aren't ready to pass the bill yet, without hearings. Obama is meeting with Congressional leaders tomorrow to discuss.
What you say about foreign countries is true too. Has been true all along, even during the Bush administration.

I think Congress is getting the message that the public is a little fed up with bailouts and stimulus packages in the billions. It didn't get a ton of airplay during the holidays, but it came out that Wall Street used some of their bailout money to pay huge year end bonus' to their executives; and refused to answer questions as to how they were using the money. They claimed there is no requirement for them to report on the use of the money. I kept waiting for Congress to whine that they were pushed to act quickly and did not get a chance to ponder it... but it disappeared off the press radar and that was that.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I'm thinking about buying some stuff, but I want a stimulus check to convince me to do it... ;-)

I am fairly sure the "test" Biden was contemplating was from a foreign government taking some kind of action to see how he would react (i.e., North Korea threatening South Korea, China threatening Taiwan, Iran attacking Israel or invading Iraq, etc.) ala the Cuban Missle Crisis with JFK. I actually believe that the worse our economic circumstances become the more likely one of more of these countries will do just that.

This is in my view what is called an historic, once in a generation opportunity. Significant domestic challenges, internal dissent about the war in Iraq, the election to President of a wildly inexperienced, classic liberal in the Jimmy Carter model and Congress controlled by the loony left (possibly soon to be joined by the pornographic comedian) all might be too much of a temptation to those countries that have been itching to give us bloody nose. If you wanted to act and get away with it why not early in the term of the neophyte President? I know I would. And what if all three happened simultaneously? That would be more than this administration could hope to handle.

I hope and pray that I am too pessimistic but unlike the idealists that believed the world would come together in a love fest simply because the Messiah was elected I realize that the world is a dangerous place and we should have never taken this risk of electing him in the first place.

Now MM, how can you continue to say that Obama is a classic liberal when he has appointed a centerist cabinet. He isn't Jimmy Carter. He isn't Bill Clinton. it remains to be seen how he will get along with Pelosi and Reid. I know you didn't vote for him, and don't like him, but you could still give him a break until he gets into office and has his first 100 days. I think you are going to be surprised. I think he will listen to opposition opinions.
And maybe his "inexperience" will be a benefit -- maybe he'll listen rather than thinking he knows it all.

I saw an interview with Dick Cheney Bob Scheiffer yesterday (Face the Nation?) and Dick Cheney still scares the heck out of me. And he's been kicking around Washington forever. The man can't even make eye contact with the interviewer or the camera. I think he could have had a career as a Mafia Don.
He can't admit to anything having not gone according to plan. To me, that is very scary. He can't admit to "lesson's learned" which is a Washington staple. And he claims he might write a book, but it also sounded to me like he is not ready to leave Washington. If his heart doesn't kill him, he'll resurface.

I agree with you hound. I have not been a fan of Bush, but some of his recent interviews where he actually admitted to some mistakes, makes me like him a lot more. There has never been a president who hasn't made mistakes. The ability to look back and see things you wish you had done differently is a very human characteristic. I think Bush did some good things and some bad things. Being able to look back and see the difference makes a big impact on how I will see him in history.

Cheney shows none of this humanity. I think George W. Bush would have been a much better president if he had not had Cheney around. I think Cheney was the architect of a lot of the things that Bush will be blamed for.

Overall, Bush is a somewhat sympathetic character. I have no sympathy for Cheney.

My two cents.
