This was not in the book. Long story short once you move out of Alabama for more than 3 years and return you have to take the boat exam again. Which I did, but here is one of the questions that stumped me.
Question: If the wind or current is holding your boat against the dock as you try to launch, which line do you cast off last? a. starboard (right) line b. port (left) line c. stern line d. bow line

Correct answer: d
Explanation: If the wind or current direction is toward the dock: a) cast off the stern line, and move and secure the bow line to a mid-boat position on the dock; b) put the boat into forward gear briefly, and turn the steering wheel hard toward the dock; and c) cast off the bow line and back out slowly until you have room to shift into forward and turn away from the dock

....and off on another subject. Why are there no "driving" tests for boaters? You can take all the tests in the world and pass all of them, but when it comes to "real" world experiences, you flunk. My husband, in his job, has always been fascinated that "electrical engineers" can get a degree from college and have no idea how to wire an outlet.

Just make sure your have bumpers hanging out as you would not want to crush your dock.

I didn't get it because I am so used to the current or the wind pushing the boat away from the dock. The boat gets a lot less abuse from the dock when it is tied up downwind, but I suppose that it is not always possible to tie up to the dock that way.

If the wind is holding the boat against the dock, the captain is at liberty to cast off lines in any order desired since the boat is not going anywhere anyway. As noted above, the key here is the proper use of bumpers. Properly aligned bumpers placed at appropriate points will protect the boat and the dock and will cause spectators to believe you to be a captain worth emulating.
Just be sure and pull the bumpers inside the vessel after you depart or they will bounce wildly about.

To answer that, you need to know how the boat is tied up to the dock. Could be bow in, bow out, bahama moored, etc. And I would think spring lines would be the way to go. Glad that wasn't on the test when I took it, :-).
