with a vengeance. Lots of new polling data that show that seniors are paying very close attention to the Obamacare debate and are actually reading the various bills. Rasmussen has approval now at only 41% which is a new low and the internals show most of the losses come from seniors.

One of the primary reasons the Senate Finance Committee whacked the public option is their fear of a backlash from seniors. Seniors simply and correctly do not believe Obama when he says he is going to cut $500 billion in waste and fraud from Medicare. They know the truth that the only efficiency government can extract from Medicare is through rationing. And the optimum place to ration health care is with the demographic group that uses the system the most, our seasoned citizens.

This is further confirmed with the government media now churning out all sorts of allegedly helpful articles with titles like Pulling the Plug on Grandma and More Health Care Is Not Always Good For You. They might be old, and they might have been duped into taking a hope and a chance on change but they aren't stupid. I heard a very simple explanation from someone why Dems have never been able to get their wet dream of socialized medicine passed, and that is most people are relatively happy with their health care and their health insurance (which is borne out in numerous polls). Not that there aren't some areas needing repair but they do not want to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

MM,
-I find that when I talk now with my democratic party senioir friends, they have turned against this health bill but not against the democratic party. That may change as this debate continues. Extreme liberals on the other hand remain impervious
-I have found the following arguments very persuasive among democratic party seniors:
--Why the Agust Rush?: why do the dem leaders now say that their new proposals are much better than the one (HR3200) that had to, ...just had to... be passed before the August recess? In other words, the dem leaders admit that HR 3200 was not a good bill and it would have been a big mistake to follow their leadership.
--Why the Non-Readers?: Why didn't teh dem congresssmen/women think enough of their constituents to read the bill before the August vote?...or especially why hadn't most of them still read teh bill before they went on August break and met with their constituenst? It was apparant to almost everyone that they hadn't read it.
--Why 2013? -If teh bill just had to be passed by August recess, ...or now has to be passed by December, why don't the changes go into effect until 2013, i.e. after the nect election? The answer is obvious.
--Why wait on Waste?: If waste in the system is $500 billion and can pay for a good new system, then why not just get rid of the fraud and waste right now. Then the system will be solvent. We must now what and where the waste is if we can put a dollar amount on it.
--Why not just fix the Insurance Companies?: vote regulations that ensure companies will not dump sick people; will convey coverage; accept preexisting illnesses; etc. This is the biggest healthcare problem, -people going broke to pay medical bills when insurance won't pay.
--No Rationing?: real world examples exist in countries with socialized medicine that show rationing is always the result, ...and most of teh rationing is done on senior citizens.
Public Option? What's that all about? look at the Barney Frank's clip below. The clip shows that what the dem leadership really thinks vs what they tell us; they are just liars and think we are just stupid.

-Seniors may be old but they are not stupid. Both democrats and republicans better begin to understand that

I have also seen a softening on the healthcare issue by AARP since so many seniors are dropping memberships. While I am only 54, I am still on AARP's target list so I get all their emails.

From what is on the front page of the WSJ this morning, it looks like the public option on healthcare looks to be dead. They should take it a step further and turn medicare over to the private sector as well and governments role be negotiate the rate with insurance companies. Put it out to bid.

The NY Times reported the death of the public option on page A18 ... while the WSJ had it on the front page, somehow the Times felt there was 17 pages of more important news than that.

Yankee: It's worse than thinking we are stupid, its that they have utter disdain for anyone that deems to disagree with them on any issue and they view their constituents as mind-numbed lambs ready for the slaughter. And who can blame them, these same people put them in office election after election. For them there is no such thing as principled disagreement on the issues. Its about demonizing, marginalizing and destroying the enemy using any means possible.

I think the simple answer to all your questions is they realize that the vast majority of Americans like their health insurance, want sensible reforms to deal with the thorny issues (prior conditions, portability, being dropped, etc.) without government control and most importantly, the more we read and understand the bills the less we like them and the more we oppose them.

That is why the rush, why they don't want to read it and why they are probably going to try to get what they want through arcane procedural approaches rather than a straight vote. They are he!! bent on getting this done as a gift to unions and trial lawyers and don't care what their constituents want.
