Apparently this is a problem that has been going on for a number of years and really came to their attention with a 1997 report compiled by the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission out of Anniston, Al. Lake Weiss is a wonderful place to fish and I am deeply disappointed that the pollution continues to be tolerated. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners headed by Probate Judge Melvyn Salter is beginning to take action to correct this problem and I believe that they need our full support.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP? WHERE ARE THE MAJOR PROBLEMS? WHAT DO YOU THINK IS A MAJOR FACTOR. IS THIS A CURRENT OR LONG GOING ISSUE? I AM SURE THERE ARE MANY THAT WOULD LIKE TO GET INVOLVED.

First off, become familiar with much of the source of the problem.
This article highlights some of those issues.

Then get involved, let the Cherokee County Commission know that you are aware of the problem and ask
how you can help.  Do join the Weiss Lake Improvement Association, they have the organization and the
contacts but without our support they lack the resources.

If you know of someone dumping waste in the lake, even if it's sink water let them know it isn't legal and
it contributes to the problem.  If you don't feel comfortable doing that send them an anonymous letter.  If
they continue then report them to the Department of Natural Resources.

Finally, contact the Cherokee County Commission and urge them to enforce House Bill HB931 which was
written by Rep. Richard Lindsey and deals with the problem.
