We received a notification from LakeWatch that there was E. coli noted at several testing sites on the lake including the mainstream reservoir.  Is anyone concerned about swimming or being in the water? Apparently E. coli colonization increases with increased rain runoff from poultry and animal farms.

You might need to look at municipalities.

What were the numbers and where?  A lot depends on how high as to whether there is any risk.  Also, absent an ongoing source the numbers will decrease fairly quickly.  In short, unless they're screaming high where you happen to be swimming and ingesting water it shouldn't be a problem.

To get mew water testers throughout the lake.  The area on 280 where there is runoff near the chicken houses.

Don't know how true this is but I heard there are numerous bodies floating upstream, dead from swimming in the nasty lake water. I'll take your waterfront property off your hands (at a greatly reduced price) before it's worthless. LOL

The numbers were above 600 E. coli per 100 mililiters of water at 2 locations above Hwy 280 bridge - in the Baker's Bottom area, and downstream about 100 yards above the Coley Creek confluence with the river. They occured shortly after Tropical Storm Ida passed through our area, dumping ~ 3 inches of rain in the watershed. This concentration is approximately double the max level that ADEM considers safe for swimming, which is 235 E. coli per 100 mL of water. And, yes, the E. coli dissapear relatively quickly in surface waters since they prefer 98.6 degrees inside the animal intestinal tract. We/Lake Watch are working with a microbiologist at AU who is sampling the water and doing genetic testing, called Microbial Source Tracking, to determine what animal the E. coli is coming from - human, cattle, chicken, wildlife, other.  We/Lake Watch will let folks know as we get results from this work.
