I am buying a second home on Lay Lake and have a question that I dont know where to obtain the answer. Does Lay drop the water during the year? If so, does anyone know when and how much it drops?
Also, who should I call if I want to rebuild or remodel my pier & boat slip?

The lake does drop but usually only once a year in the fall and only 5-6 feet so maintenance can be performed on the steam plant in Wilsonville. Sometimes it is dropped in the spring as well. Usually it is for about 1-2 weeks but this year it was fully drawn for only 2 days. You can get all that type of info by calling 1-800-lakes11.
For building permits, you better hurry. They are currently free but it is probable that the cost will go to $200 as a base price and more for a larger structure soon. The "Lake Pimp" as we call him, but not to his face because he holds your permit literally in his hands, is Tim Herrin. He lives in Shelby Shores and is easliy recognized by the old green marine police boat he drives. You can look at alabama power's web site for his phone # or call the 1-800-lakes11 and wade through the prompts for it. You will need a plat map as well as a detailed drawing, with measurements, of exactly what you are wanting to do. I've heard that you can no longer have more than 1 wall on boat houses, even if it is replacing an existing structure. Fortunately, mine was grandfathered in. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the rules before you start because Tim is a nice guy, but a stickler for details...and he does check your progress much like a building inspector does. The only difference is that he just drops in without a call from you.

Lake Pimp?? I'm quite sure I've been called worse...lol.
Just a couple of corrections on Jamie's reply: The lake is usually drawn down in the fall 2-3' for mtce/inspection of Logan Martin Dam. Normally no longer than a week but this depends on the scheduled work. Spring drawdowns used to be common but are rare nowadays. Certainly still a possibility if the powers determine it's needed.
Current rules do not allow any sides on a boathouse. A section of the bankside wall may be closed in to provide for a storage closet.
FYI, that ugly green boat I ride around in is actually a "new" custom jet drive built by Wooldridge Boats in Mobile. It'll run in 3-4" of water and it just bounces off the stumps.

Hey, I didn't coin the term "lake pimp"...just propogated it. OK, so I used it a good bit! LMAO! Also, for the record Tim referred to his boat as the "ugly green boat". I simply regurgitated his own words! It's actually a really nice boat. I'm just jealous of his job and his boat!

they drop the water twice a year to repair concrete on the dam i think you can call alabama power for a schedule

Alabama Power requires a permit for new pier construction, not sure for rebuilds. The lake is usually lowered 3 feet in early fall. Other than that,it remains at full pool year round and sometimes isn't lowered every year.
