I personally think that this act has no value. However, the other side of me says we are walking on our tip toes when Islam is considered. What does out government do when the flag is burned in this country or other parts of the world and embassies are bomber by persons tied to Islam.

1. What did our military say in an E mail when 10 people were slaughtered in Afghanistan when it was discovered that they were Christians.
2. What does our military say about the $1,000 bounty offered by Iran for every American soldier killed in Afghanistan.
3. 9/11 was an Islamic driven effort
4. Saudi Arabia will not permit Bibles to be brought into the country.
5. Christianity is not allowed in Saudi Arabia.
6. Christians cannot visit Mecca
7. Iran desires to annihilate Israel.
8. Why was Daniel Pearl beheaded.
9. What does our military say when the planners of the embassy bombing in Africa are apprehended and there is a posssibility that they will never stand trial because "their rights were violated in the interrogation process"

I gather that Gen Petraeus feels this will be used as an excuse to incite rage and endanger the lives of American troops.
While I can understand the feeling behind it, what does it really accomplish?  In this case, I don't think it is a matter of tiptoeing around Islam.  Why incite violence?  The lives of our troops are worth more than an symbolic gesture.

Rights versus Appropriate Acts

1. Atheists have the right and are protected by law  to post anti Christian comments in libraries, statehouses, city parks along with Xmas scenes.
2. American have the right to burn the flag of their country in protest.
3. Bill Ayers served no time in prison even though he attempted to bomb the Pentagon.- was this his right?
4. Lewis Farrakhan has the right to deliver a speech and make remarks derogatory to Whites and Jews
5. Muslims in Afghanistan have the right to chant "Kill Americans" or "Destroy the USA".
6. Muslims in the Philippines  behead Christian missionaries - Do they feel bad when this happens?
7. Americans have the right to burn all types of books including the Bible and Quran

These actions are legal but are not appropriate. Is the church in Florida using the national media for attention?  YES! Should they consider their actions in view of American military lives - YES.

How far should Christian, Jewish, and Buddhist American go in an effort not to offend Muslims? Muslims are living the "good life" in this country. American Muslim females do not have the fear of being stoned. American females can drive automobiles and shop where they desire. Mosques are everywhere in this country. They are free to worship without intimidation. So what is the number one issue in the media - the location of the new Mosque in NY City and who is providing the funds!  They do have the right to build the Mosque. Is this a good idea to build in the location proposed? NO!

Is Islamophobia a term of convenience that is being promoted when Muslims are involved in acts contrary to the belief of the majority of American just as the term racism is conveniently being used by Lewis Farrakhan, Jesse Jackson, and  Al Sharpton. YES!.

Of course they have the right to do it.  But just because they can, doesn't mean they should.
I think there is a matter of balance.   And balance seems to be in short supply right now.

-Will this stupid act endanger troops? --Yes! -Does this idiot preacher have the right to do it? --yes! ..errr, No! ...errr, maybe! ...errr, maybe not. -I don't know what the First Amendment allows me to do anymore. Do you? -Do we have any rights lawyers in teh forum who can help us? -WHY THE CONFUSION ON THE 1st AMENDMENT? ...because of teh recent development of "Hate Speech" laws. Because I have no knowledge of the proper law books to quote, let me quote Wikipedia: " Hate speech is, outside the law, any communication which disparages a person or a group on the basis of some characteristic such as race or sexual orientation.[1][2] In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group. The law may identify a protected individual or a protected group by race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or other characteristic.[3] In some countries, a victim of hate speech may seek redress under civil law, criminal law, or both." -Between "political Correctness" and "Hate speech," we have self-censpred ourselves as a society and have given up our 1st Amendment rights!

I just wish for once the media could use some common sense and totally ignore the freak shows like this itinerant preacher.  The guy's church has 50 members, at least until he has become a national story.  I am sure he will reap plenty of financial rewards until some Islamofascist kills him for burning a book.  And of course he will be blamed instead of the nutjob that kills him because in the government media template it is worse to do something like this than it is to strap on a bomb and blow up a bus filled with children or slitting someone's throat with a rusty knife while videotaping it.  The world upside down.

Just ignore him and leave him in obscurity and this is a non event.

I'm totally with T-Hound on this one. So an idiot preacher with 50 members is going to burn Korans. And what purpose does this serve? Well, as MM said, probably allot of National Press. And inciting our enemy abroad. Great idea. I must be getting really old. I just can't understand some things.... and this is one of them. And more importantly, can someone who knows that nutjob Preacher suggest a mustache trimming?

Pretty plain and simple to understand.  The only real strategy available to the DNC is to attempt to label conservatives (read Tea Party) as fanatics and this plays into their strategy.  This church may be the farthest thing from true fiscal and social conservatism espoused by certain entities in the Republican party, but their actions can be cut and pasted to the conservative wing of the party pretty easily by the media. I, at this point, think that voting Americans know exactly what the Tea Party represents and will essentially ignore any media attempts to label them fanatical.  Let them spend their war chest, but they can't hide from their record despite being the majority party in congress for the past 6 years and counting.  Can't wait for November 7.
