I've been on the lake a good bit the last few weeks getting ready for fall tournaments. The bass are just now starting to transition into the creeks as this first round of significant fall weather hits. Shad will start their migration into shallower water and the bass will follow. Here's what I've been catching them on lately:

Largemouth: The largemouth I've caught recently have been holding to cover in 6-12 feet of water. As the shad move in I expect to see them go to the banks and ambush the schools as they come by. Natural color lipless crankbaits and spinnerbaits have landed some 2-4lb class largemouth with a couple of 5 plus here and there. Blowdowns in Sandy Creek, around Paces Point and up towards Wind Creek have been working well for me.

Spotted Bass: Spots are on the move. These fish are starting to turn on in larger schools as the shad move. I've caught them on rattle traps, spinnerbaits, spooks, buzzbaits, flukes, jerkbaits and of course the tried and true shakeyhead. Focus on the natural colors of the shad and you will do well. On Sunday we boated 9 spots over 3 pounds on spinnerbaits near Sandy Creek. Earlier in the morning we picked up several down near the dam using the same technique...all of them over 2 lbs. You can also find them on wind blown main points and secondary points but I expect them to start moving into the creeks after those shad this week. I'll be fishing this weekend so expect and update then.

Good luck and tight lines.

Thanks for the update.  Planning on fly fishing in the creeks soon.  I did notice last week the spots had already moved off their summer hangouts.  What about up river?  Do any of the fish beside stripers move up the river or at least into the mouth?
