Last winter I built steps at the end of my dock. I currently have to clean them off every two or three days or they get very slippery. I would like to hear how others handle this problem. I am assuming that my steps are not the only ones that get slippery. The steps are bare wood.

I have seen folks place down sections of asphalt roofing shingles. Not sure all of us would like that look, but it is probably makes for a safer situation. Just a thought.

Fulltimer, you have got a serious problem there. You could drain the water around the steps, water proof them, cut them off at the water level,if that does not work, I guess that I would commite sucide.

Thanks for offering to kill your self, but I don't think it would help the steps. If you killed yourself in the water it would only add to the problem, but thanks anyway

Jim, if the question bothers you--just stay out of it...you are in no way obligated to respond. Quite frankly, it would be interesting to hear how others have approached the situation. I tried the asphalt shingle bit a few years ago but did not work so well. There are commercial strips you can get to go on the steps but I do not know if it is a practical solution....I am thinking that a good outdoor carpet firmly affixed to the steps might be a good solution but I have never tried it.......

I also built steps and a platform that is under water. I have tried roofing shingles and carpeting but still have the slick problem. When the water goes down I'm going to try a very course exterior carpeting to see how it will do. Thanks Jim for offering to kill yourself. Let us know beforehand where to send flowers.

You should not put shingles in that wonderful water.

Man....the responses to that question! Geez... My suggestion is to do what I did last week....I pressure washed my dock and all slippery portions of steps/ladders etc. I know this isn't a long term solution but I don't mind repeating the process.

I pressure washed mine too but I just assumed he meant the steps lead into the water. Mine pick up a muddy silt that makes them very hard to walk on. Whenever there is a croud swimming at the pier I take a brush and clean them off ( underwater ).

I just towel them off each use. leave the towel out in sun to dry.
I had a hindged set in salt water. No one keeps them in or barrnaces grow.

why the heck do I hit the enter key too quick..
What I do on my steps is keep a long handled marine brush on the dock and when I show up I just scrub off the crud. Takes 2 minutes. Works for the weekend just fine.

It's a slippery problem, you know..... On my steps, I'm going to try using a router to cut several parallel 1/4 inch grooves in the wood. That should add traction & "grip" I hope. But until the water goes down, hang on to the railing.......

Sure don't . Just have to deal with Atlanta's toxic waste and human feces in the pristine Chattahoochee River.

They make a paint additive that adds grip. You would probably need to use an epoxy type paint being that the steps are submerged.
