Found this on-line on www.gulfcoastrentals.com regarding real estate in Destin.
Check the first paragraph. I don't think they are leaving the ocean for the mountains....I think they are coming to the lake!!!!!!!!!
Florida Gulf Coast Real Estate Now Buyer's Market!

If you've been thinking about buying a 2nd home or investment property in Destin or Panama City Beach, the time has come. Although many buyers have been scared away by the tumultuous hurricane season we have endured in 2005, Destin and PC Beach are fantastic investments right now because of several reasons. For the first time in what seems a long while, the gulf coast has become a buyer's market! First off, there is an over abundance in the supply of condominiums currently for sale. Lots of sellers have had their fill of hurricanes or evacuations and are looking to invest in other opportunities that exist with an elevation that's not quite sea level(ie. the north Georgia mountains). This opens up opportunities for buyers that are willing to "weather the storm". Plus, next year's rental market in Destin and PC Beach should be a stellar one in lieu of the fact that there won't be as many gulf coast rental choices available to tourists because of Katrina demolished cities.
Additionally, there has been such a huge boom in pre-construction property that even if you previously weren't able to get into a "ground floor" or pristine opportunity in a new high rise in Destin or Panama City Beach, you will have a better chance in the coming months with new projects being released, monthly. Most of the speculative buyer's have fallen by the way side. This, in turn, means less competition and a far better chance that you can actually reserve a condominium of your own to utilize as a second home or long term investment that should perform well if held for more than two years. I, personally, know of several new projects, that with $5000, will get you a reservation on the "ground floor".
Finally, many buyers that placed reservations on new projects that are nearing completion, and closing date, were speculative buyers that are now deciding to do anything possible to sell the unit quickly. Many of these buyers do not want mortgage payments and have reduced the price of their units, substantially. This is a wonderful chance for you to mull over the best new hi-rise projects and make offers on the lowest priced units. There are literally hundreds of brand new gulf front condos that you can close on in the next few months at $400 a square foot, or less, before negotiations!

Big - the party was a little too stuffy for my taste.
