I'm new to the area and am looking to get my boat out this Saturday on Lay lake for some recreational fun....is it worth the trip? Never been on any lake in AL so any help is appreciated!

WELL WORTH IT STEVE...DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU PUT IN BUT MAKE A RUN DOWN RIVER TOWARD THE DAM...AFTER BOZO'S MARINA THE LAKE OPENS UP AND YOU'LL SEE A BARE SPOT ON THE BANK (ON THE RIGHT) IN THE DISTANCE WITH SEVERAL BOATS AROUND IT..IT'S THE BEST ROPE SWING I'VE TRIED..LOTS OF FUN...THEN WHEN YOU LEAVE THERE GO FURTHER DOWN RIVER UNTIL YOU SEE THE DAM..OFF TO THE LEFT YOU'LL SEE SOME WHITE SIGNS THAT SAY "DANGER-STUMPS" GO IN BETWEEN THEM AND FOLLOW THE CREEK UNTIL YOU SEE A BUNCH OF BOATS ANCHORED UP AT A BIG ROCK..THIS IS PAINT CREEK AND FOLKS ANCHOR UP THERE AND HANG OUT AND WATCH FOLKS JUMP FROM THE ROCK...IT'S ABOUT A 30 FOOT JUMP...ENJOY--IF YOUR OUT SUNDAY, I MAY SEE YOU IF YOU'RE THERE--WHITE NAUTICSTAR DECKBOAT..

Thanks for the points of interest. We'll be sure to check them out. Can you tell me where a good place to put in? I have a 175 series Sea Ray. I'm coming down from Hoover. What's the average depth on the lake? Also, when I am going down river or through the creek is this at idle speed or do most boaters open up? Sounds like idle because of the stumps. Are there areas to stay clear from (e.g., shallow, stumps, etc)? If so, are they well marked? I greatly appreciate your insights!!

FROM HOOVER YOU MAY WANT TO MAPQUEST BEESWAX BOAT LAUNCH (PUBLIC) OR BOZO'S MARINA IN COLUMBIANA..I DON'T KNOW HOW DEEP YOUR BOAT RUNS BUT IT'S PRETTY SAFE TO STAY IN THE CHANNEL UNTIL YOU GET UP PAST BOZO'S..FROM THERE IT'S VERY WIDE AND ABOUT 45 FEET DEEP..THE TWO WHITE SIGNS THAT SAY "DANGER-STUMPS" ARE FAR APART, YOU CAN RUN WIDE OPEN IN BETWEEN THEM..THE WATER IS ABOUT 40-50 FEET DEEP ALL THE WAY TO THE ROCK WITH IS ABOUT 1.5 MILES FROM THE SIGNS..YOU CAN SEE THE STUMPS NEAR THE BANK SO JUST KEEP ABOUT 50-75 YARDS FROM THE BANK AND YOU'LL BE FINE...IF YOU DECIDE RUN UPRIVER TOWARD LOGAN MARTIN DAM MAKE SURE YOU STAY IN THE CHANNEL ALL THE WAY TO CEDAR CREEK, OUTSIDE THE CHANNEL THERE ARE SEVERAL STICKUPS WHICH ARE VERY VISIBLE OUTSIDE THE CHANNEL MARKERS...

LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS AND WELCOME TO LAY LAKE..

Thanks Worm for the responses.... Is this lake real narrow? Shallow? New lakes always worry me when I've never seen or been on them. I love to open up and cruise, hopefully I can do so on this lake. Anything else I need to know about Lay Lake or other spots that are fun to explore and hangout? I have two kids, 8 and 11....they love to jump in the water and swim around but I think they are worried about snakes. Snakes a problem at all in the lake? We're originally from WI and don't have that problem....anything to give them peace and mind will help. Thanks!

AS FAR AS SNAKES GO, I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE IN THE CHANNEL AND AROUND THE HOT SPOTS (THE ROCK AND SWING) I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE...IN FACT, I GO OUT EVERY EVENING IN THE CHANNEL AND SWIM INSTEAD OF SWIMMING IN MY POOL..THE LAKE IS NARROW COMPARED TO OTHER LAKES UP RIVER, BUT WE ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT HAVE WATER...IF YOU LAUCH AT BOZOS IN COLUMBIANA THEN DOWN RIVER IS WIDE AND DEEP ALL THE WAY TO THE DAM...IF YOU DECIDE TO EXPLORE UP RIVER FROM BOZOS THEN IT WILL BE WISE TO STAY IN THE CHANNEL (IT'S MARKED WELL EVERYWHERE THERE IS STICKUPS)...BE CAREFUL FOR ABOUT 7-8 MILES UPRIVER FROM BOZOS BECAUSE THE CHANNEL IS KINDA NARROW AND IT'S CURVY SO WATCH FOR THE MARKERS..AFTER THAT IT OPENS UP AGAIN TO WIDE BANKS AND 40 FT. DEEP WATER..THE LAKE ITSSELF ISN'T A DEEP ONE AS COMPARED TO MARTIN AND OTHERS..THE DEEPEST POINT IS JUST DOWNRIVER FROM BOZOS AND IT'S ABOUT 75 FT. DEEP...PLENTY OF WATER DOWNRIVER FROM BOZOS TO RIDE AND TUBE (OR WHATEVER YOUR KIDS LIKE) WHILE NOT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT THE CHANNEL OR HITTING ANYTHING...

ANYMORE QUESTIONS JUST ASK...
