Over the past several months, many a dog has shown up on our property. One even had a tag with a name and number but repeated calls to that number got no response. What gives with all the irresponsible owners??!!

TODAYS missing dog is brown with a flourescent orange collar. It has been hanging around many homes in the area and many of us have sought to find it's home/owner. Anyone who has any idea where this dog belongs, PLEASE reply to this thread or alert the owner. This dog has been hanging out from door to door for at least one month and is intelligent and kind. I would hate to see it SHOT (which has been suggested by more than one frustrated resident) or delivered to the pound.

The working theory on some of these dogs is that the low water level has allowed them to travel by shore line to seek out areas far from home only to get lost.

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED.

There is also a pair of dogs... a gold lab/retriever with a black lab/retriever. The gold has a tag with a number but we get no reply from that home when we leave message.

There is also a medium length hair black lab/retriever that shows up every morning whilst we wait for the Reeltown bus to pick up the kids.

THIS IS ALL ON CENTERPORT ROAD between CHUCK's and the hair pin turn.

I find it sad that owners can't keep track of their dogs and aren't even willing to properly tag them so us RESPONSIBLE folk can return them. I've watch countless residents attempt to drive this brown dog (with the flourescent collar) around the neighborhood trying to find it's home....

The brown lab/? with orange collar owner was located today. The others you named are abandoned strays. I talked to the sherrif myself and he promised help with the situation a couple months back but so far no help has come. A lot of calls to him might help.

That is good news. That is a nice dog... it's good to hear that at least ONE dog was united with it's owner!

As for the others, I'll make the call.

This year was a peak in terms of strays. Saw a few 'packs' roaming Centerport at times. I will never understand how you can have a dog, not keep it it tied up or fenced AND not put a tag on it.

I am not sure how bad things are economically in this area, but numerous animal rescue agencies across the country are reporting the recent dramatic increase in pet abandoments.

Many people loosing their homes have pets and can not take them to rental apartments or homes. Rather than making the effort to find a good home for their pets, they drop them close to nice areas in hopes the animals will find a good home. These people do not want to take the pets to shelters since they fear the animal will be disposed of or there is a fee for dropping them at a shelter.

Sadly, it is a situation that will continue to get worse. Then there is also the issue of neutering and spaying pets, and bad economical times further frustrate the situation.

That's a good point.

I would lile to think the nicer areas on the lake tend to be less effected by the economy ... ie- many folks buy lake property as a second home, vaca home or for retirement purposes and are less likely to be effected by our impending recession. Knowing this, though, might lead someone from outside the area to leave a dog HERE.

Regardless, I have often said I won't own a dog until I have the time and resources to dedicate to it. You are not doing a dog justice by not training, taking care of it's health, identifying it and simply providing it with a good home. So many people don't think ahead as to what it will actually cost to own and raise a dog properly which can lead to poor care and/or eventual abandonment.

Since we moved down here, I have rescued 8 dogs and 3 kitties. I took them all to the shelter, in hopes that #1) they would be reunited with their owners or find a new, loving home, #2) that their owners will learn a lesson about letting them run loose by having to pay the fine to get them out of the shelter (if the owners are that irresponsible), and #3) that I would hopefully be saving them from certain death by getting hit by a car. If I didn't already have 5 of my own "rescued" critters, I would have kept some of them.
The strays must know that we are animal lovers and will keep them safe until we can take them to a shelter. It must be my Saint Francis statue in my garden that brings them to us. For the stray kitties that show up, I even keep an extra potty box for them.
If you do run across a stray, if you are able, please take them to the shelter so they can have a chance at life or even a better life.

Wow... kitties!

I've only seen one in the last 10 years and it was an older house cat that had slipped out. I would think that the wild critters would have fun with a cat should they run across one.

My ex-girlfriend witnessed a dog getting hit on Centerport and stopped to help and it died in her arms. It really gets you when you witness something like that....

Those kitties you are talking about seem to carry all the instincts of the bigger cats, that is, Hunt and Survive. Those "critters" had better take care, or become lunch for Kittie, while they are having fun.

Side note... that brown dog with the orange color is still running around.

Anyone seen the two black dogs lurking up and down Centerport? One has a harness on but I don't see a collar with a tag.

Laskeshore the day I saw the brown dog it was in the posession of Patrick and Greg Harris and they were taking it home. The two black dogs you see are homeless and roam the community seeking food and fighting the neighborhood dogs. These need to go.

Patrick came by that day and asked me if I knew where it lived and I said I didn't.... I had seen it following a jogger one day and asked him as well.

I see Greg when he is out walking, I'll have to ask him what happened.

I'll call the Sheriff Dept and see what happens re the two black dogs.
