I just heard that SLISA is going to join forces with the Smith Lake Preservation Commitee, in order to help clean-up the lake!
APRIL FOOLS!
Nah, they still only care about getting the water levels stabilized in order to sell off all of their seasonal water lots they purchased...

When are the residents of Smith Lake going to demand some sort of regulation on the size of boats and amount of boats on the lake?
My children and grandchildren cannot swim on the weekends because of the huge waves made by so much water traffic.

I cant say that I agree with putting regulations on boat size on the lake...even a small boat will put out a big wave if you run speed of 10 to 20 mph dragging through the water...the main problem I see is that most
people dont have any respect for others...and then some seem to be in their own little world and havent got a clue that their wake is bouncing boats and boat houses around.
But to be real...I have 2 solutions...first is do what I learned to do years ago...only buy lake property that is off the main body of water, where it is calm, quite and peaceful.
the second solution would to be open a hunting season on boaters that tick you off...lol

I could go for some target practice. Maybe rotten eggs or tomatoes in a slingshot LOL.
On a serious note...other Alabama lakes have put a moratorium on large boats and houseboats on the lakes. When the bill went before the legislature somehow Smith Lake mysteriously dissapeared from the regulation list...Wonder why?????
Some lakes in Tennessee and Kentucky limit the speed you can go and some lakes even disallow motorized boats and only allow electric boats.

Only boats with odd numbers on their tags allowed on the lake on Saturdays the 1st and 3rd weekend of the month. Only even numbered tagged boats allowed on the lake on Sundays 1st and 3rd weekend of the month. Reverse the order on 2nd and 4th weekends. If a month has 5 Saturdays then only sail boats and out of state boats will be allowed on the water..... Jet Ski's and air planes can fly around the lake all other days.....

Actually, some valid points have been made in this thread. As far as restricting speeds on the lake, engine size, etc, I would definitely be against it. However, there does seem to be a vaild point when it comes to boat size. I don't see any reason for a houseboat or 32 FT cigarette boat on this lake; Of course, that's my feelings, which I'm sure would go against another's position. I guess what I'm trying to say here, is that everyone has their own agenda/feelings, etc. What I don't want, is the local marine law enforcement tell me what size engine, etc I can have on my boat or watercraft. We don't need new laws, just someone that enforces the present ones. You also need people that repect each others feelings and your space on the lake. By the way, why isn't SLISA trying to help with any of these problems? Maybe they're too busy trying to get their useless land developed?

I like that the discussion quickly esculated to boat sizes and engines. I bought my lake house to swim, boat and gander. I believe the WATER was made for that purpose, and the preservation of boathouses and shoreline was left up to the natural forces that were applied to them. If you don't want the shore to go away, build a retainingn wall. Stop regulation for doing so. Water is still for boats. My taxes almost doubled this year and half the year I had no lake. Taxation without representation. My boat dock came down on a tree stump and broke in half the other 20 years it's been standing hasn't been affected by boats. (ish)

What we have to keep in mind is the big picture. While the lake is showing some growing pains...ie. development, too many boats on the water and pollution of the lake we are only here for a short amount of time.
In the 3 years I have been on the lake I have gone from enjoying the weekends on my boat dock to sitting on the shore because of all the waves and traffic that have increased. At Ryan creek Marina there are over 50 new boat slips. Multiply that times the number of additional condos being built and the additional number in the planning stages and we will see 2-3 times the traffic we are seeing now with-in the next 5 years. Along with all this traffic will come more trash in the lake, serious damage to boathouses that historically survived the summers and an enviroment that will not allow for our kids to safely ride seadoos, ski, wakeboard or just enjoy a sunset on their boat docks.
Go 10 years into the future...we all, hopefully, will still be here and on the lake ...quadruple the traffic.
We all knew when we bought into Smith lake that the water levels will change/fluctuate. WE KNEW THAT. Why isn't the pressure on Alabama Power to PRESERVE this lake. Just think with strong regulations in place our investments will skyrocket. Everyone will want to be on a place where only a limited number can access.
I am not trying to be a doomsday sayer but I think it besets us all...Lovers of Smith lake to think of our investments, our children's future, and the health of this beautiful place.

I don't really understand the complaint about house boats. They're slow and much of the time just stay parked where their occupants simply enjoy a swim, camping on the water, and some fishing. I'm far more concerned with boats running at highly dangerous speeds all hours of the day and night. On a lake of this size I just can't see the need to run 80 mph on the water as if in the ocean. I definitely feel some restrictions need to apply considering the overpopulation, over development, and the density of boats on holiday weekends. Before this lake got popular just a few years ago we simply did not have these problems. My old waverunner has a top speed of 38 mph which is plenty fast on water and can get me from the dam to nearly anywhere on the lake in an hour.... what's the rush? Boats don't have brakes.....

Houseboats are not a problem on Smith Lake yet but the reason the following law

was passed is people started putting huge houseboats on lake Martin. It was quickly becoming a situation where the lake was looking like a trailor park.
We just don't need these huge houseboats and speedboats on Smith lake. I agree with you on the speed.
