Why does alabama power keep the water level in the best part of the summer. I think alabama power kills the fish at lake every year. Smith Lake is one of the best lake in the country and the cleanest. Alabama power kills the local business in area. Let's all pull together and stop them from dropping the water lever every year. So many people turn away for this lake because of it. PS if the water level is at 508 like they are reporting now i'll jump in the lake........ Pull the other lake in state

Alabama Power can regulate the water as the need to!! They own the lake!! The lake level is correct at just over 508.

I understand Alabama power owns the lake but it's this time every year they drop the water. I would just like to drop it after the summer months.

Alabama Power doesn't randomly drop the water level in the summer. There are three primary reasons the level drops during the summer. 1st the amount of rainfall greatly effects the lake level because it's not fed by any large tributaries, 2nd the lake is used for power generation during peak load that occurs due to hot weather, 3rd - the lake is used to cool the warrior river which is required for cooling water at a couple of the Power Generation Plants downstream. I wish they could keep the level up as well but it was built for this purpose so I guess they have the right to use it for what it was built for.
