I was pulled over for not having updated stickers on boat. The reason was I couldnt get them because the courthouse was closed due to COVID. The officer opted to give me a ticket for not wearing a lanyard (not sure how he figured that, but anyway). I was in a pontoon boat with two other licensed drivers, so while yes I should have been wearing this, but dont really think this was putting anyone in any neglegent danger. Thinking I would just pay a $50.00 fine I just let it go. Turns out that is a $350.00 fine..just bent over and paid it. Really just wanted to complain..see if anyone else has had the same experience. All of these regulations have gotten out of hand.

Yikes. I always wear in sea doo and reach for it when I approach an area where MPs are. I agree wearing on a big boat is a bit much

Although it is a technical violation, I don't think MP are generally out looking for that as a reason to pull someone over, especially on a large boat, as opposed to a PWC. Usually, it is for some other reason (i.e. outdated registration stickers, etc.) and they will tack that on if they observe it.
FYI, you can get your boat registration stickers online; you don't have to get them at the courthouse.

What's the length of your boat? The lanyard requirement is only for boats under a certain length. My pontoon boat is 25' and I am not required to wear the lanyard enen though it's equiped with one. You should check.

As others have said, GET THEM ONLINE. It's quicker, easier, and doesn't cost anything extra.
I finally gave up trying to convince a friend to renew online; he let the marina talk him into handling his renewals, for ONLY a $125 service fee. And all they do is renew online.

Yes -- wearing the lanyard is only required for boats under a certain length. Same thing happened to us and my husband went to court to fight the ticket and the officer did not show up -- it was thrown out --but it would have been anyway.

Boats LESS THAN 24', having an open cockpit and more than 50hp engine must have an emergency cut-off switch.

right -- I wasnt sure of the length.. but our boat was 26 ft
We didnt even know it was a thing for boats... until we got the ticket-- thought it was just for PWC.
We werent pulled over for anything inparticular -- we did have about 8 people + 2 kids on the boat and I suspect they routinely oull people over with a good number of people on a boat to check life vests and BUI , etc. I do not have a problem with them pulling people over but it's a pain to have to fight a ticket that should not have been given.

I was pulled over at the Rocks while cruising through with the 8 people, the max for my boat, 4 children and 4 adults. When I saw that I was the target I un-hooked my kill switch to move forward and get my registration from under the console. I got a ticket for no kill switch!
Oh well, I'm thankful they are trying, even against the odds.
