Every year we go through this same thing about the snakes. Snakes are a natural phenomena around the lake and in the wooded areas. Russell Lands changed the name of Rattlesnake Ridge to " The Ridge " in hopes that they would go away. I wonder why it was named Rattlesnake Ridge? Uuuuuuuuuummmmmmm?

Well if you come to the lake you're going to have them along with bugs, spiders, and alot of other icky little multilegged creatures that simply won't go away because you have appeared on the scene. Deer, opossum, rats, mice, roaches, lady bugs, coons! You name it and some of them are just waiting for you.

Now to my puzzlement. Who holds the head and who holds the tail while you people measure to determine how long the snakes are? When I see one I can't get close enough to determine what variety they are much less measure them. And I'm not even afraid of them. Just respect them and please don't kill them. And when one of your little tykes sees one teach them about it. Caught 12 bass yesterday. Peace.

To tell you the truth we didn't need to have someone holding the head and someone holding the tail of the snake. We were standing directly above the snake as it was burrowing into the rocks at the seawall.

Let me also add that when you have had a seven year old and a three year old (little girls) playing in the water in almost the same spot the day before it does give you a moment of PANICK. Like I said before, I know they are there I just don't want to see them right where my children were playing. And I can tell you that the other people at the pool didn't like it either. Neither did the Harbor Point owners!

I totally agree. Snakes are an essential part of the ecosystem( even the poisnous ones!). In fact, I saw a muskrat swimming in the lake a couple of weeks ago. He would have made a nice meal for some snake. Instead it will just multiply with no predator higher on the food chain to control it's population.

I agree ... with one small caveat ...

If I see a poisonous snake (and yes I can tell the difference) on more than one occasion in an area that we spend a lot of time in ... say, our front yard, or right next to our pier ... then I will kill the snake.

If it is non-poisonous (or if I'm not sure) .... or if it is somewhere that we are unlikely to come in contact with it ... I say let God's little creatures be ...

Just my opinion ...

...held the neck and let the tail drop down to get the length estimate. That is, after I introduced Mr. Machete to that copperhead. Oh, I had to add about 1.5-inches to account for the severed head.

There are no anaconda or boas in the lake. Herpologists, how about a little help here? Which indigenous snake eats muskrat? If we have even one I'm afraid that I will turn into one of those guys who shoots snakes indiscriminately and then looks it up in a reference book to see if the kill was or was not reasonable.
