Hello all:

Been thinking about buying a place on lake martin. Most recent place we looked at was just south of tallapoosa river bridge - Hwy 280. I don't know much about the lake as of yet,a nd have heard about problems with muddy water and debris. Could anyone elaborate on this please? How often and for how long? Is the north end of the lake navigable when this happens?

Thanks in advance
Trey

...when you are that close to the mouth, naturally it's going to be muddier.
Debris can bevery dangerous in the Spring...all the way to the dam.
It really can be dangerous anywhere on the lae...moreso in the channel.
It's a beautiful area.
If you can afford it, go for it.

Thanks Blue Creeker for the info!

I was also wondering how often this occurs (per year) and how long will the water be "muddy" and have debris when it does happen? Are there certain times of the year when its worse? Should this be a factor when considering property on the northeast side of the lake versus other areas?

Thanks again!

One more thing - can you use the lake when this happens - skiing, boating, jet skiing, etc. - or does the lake become off limits?

Thanks

....could give you a better idea of how long the debris and mud are present.
However, most would agree that the early Spring rains are basically March thru April....someone correct me if I'm off.
The waters are navigable, but you should be extra careful.
The water temps are still too cold for my bolod until June, at the earliest.
But, in the upper parts of the lake, it would be unwise to go out sking and jetting around in March.
You best take it easy.
I've seen some trees in the lake that would sink a boat.
But the worst ones are the ones you can't see.
Scary stuff.

We are located on the south side just west of the Kowaliga bridge.

When the water rises in March and April, you will find trash everywhere on the lake. It builds up around the shore during the winter, and floats away when the water rises. We start skiing in March and have few major problems in our area; but we are watchful. I imagine the main channel is worse.

We never have muddy water in our area, although sometimes it's less clear. On a bad day I can see 4-5 feet down from my dock. Average is 6-10 feet. When the kids swim with mask and snorkel, they say they can see farther. Cloudy water is more dependent on wind and rough water than time of year.

The " stained " water occurs every year in the spring as the water begins to rise as it is scheduled to do. With the spring rains the water colors a bit darker and you will see debris and trash and limbs and logs in the water. This happens on every lake I've ever fished on. If you are a careful boater it won't be a problem. You'll never regret living on Lake Martin for those reasons.

We have a place on Madwind creek . I love it. Heavy rain in the spring muddies the water a bit. I also think the hwy 280 construction has contributed to this the last few years, but it's not at all a problem. This happens on most lakes after heavy rain. As for logs== be careful as in all lakes in the early spring, but not a problem.

Glad to see that you're thinking about joining our happy crew-- lake life is all that it's cracked up to be. We have a place in Perue Creek. As everyone else said, the spring brings debris everywhere, but it is less on our end of the lake-- further from the main river channel. I can see the bottom of the lake- 8 to 10 feet- in early spring, but as the water warms and algae grows, it gets a bit cloudier. Great fishing--easy for kids to catch off the dock. Not to mention the great folks...good luck and hope to see you out there next spring!
