We love the lake so much that we are thinking of moving here full time. We have children in middle & elementary school. Does anyone out there have children who are in public or private schools?

We felt the same way and moved her full time this summer. We have one in elementary and one in H.S. in the Alex City Schools. The schools are good and the kids here have been very welcoming. If you have not already committed to a particular part of the lake I would certainly encourage you to consider the Alex City schools.

What are the names of the Alex City schools? I can look them up on the web. We have a tiny weekend cabin on the Auburn side of the lake and will be selling it if we decide to find a place more suitable for year round living.

Thanks! Where is Horseshoe Bend High School? Is it really K-12 or is the internet info wrong? Let's just get down to the nitty-gritty....if you live on the lake and have kids, which schools are best for academics?

...in Alex City's limits you'll go to school there. Anywhere else in Tallapoosa County and you go to a county school and it depends on which zone you live in. On the lake it'll be Dadeville or Reeltown.
Of course, I could be wrong.

There is also a small portion of the Lake (Parker Creek area) toward Alex City that is in Coosa County.

....forgot about that. And I know not a thing about Elmore County schools.

If you live in Tallapoosa County your kids can go to Alex City schools. The system is great. They have just recently become the first city school system in the United States to be accredited by Southern Colleges and Universities. If you contact the individual school your child will be attending, I'm sure the principal will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Forget the depending on where you live part of the other posts. . .make it a point to buy in an area that will send your children to one of the following: Alex City Schools--BRHS is a good school; Elmore County Schools--great school system though I am less familiar with ECHS than I am with the other three HS in Elmore; Tallassee City Schools--Good schools formerly affiliated with Elmore County Schools.
I wouldnt voluntarily send my kids to Reeltown or Dadeville--not because of the teaching quality, as i am sure that they have qualified faculty--more because of the delinquents in the student body. But i guess in the end, education IS what the child makes of it.

I really appreciate all the information. I even had a couple of wonderful Alex City teachers respond thru email. This is a big decision. I would like to get it right the first time. Our cabin is in Dadeville. It is too small for year round living. I am afraid the schools there are a little too rural for us anyway. So it looks like the Alex City area is the place to be if you want to raise a family on the lake.

If you are referring to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), I believe you may have your information incorrect. Without proper accreditation, no public school could receive adequate state and federal funding. There are many, many "city" school systems accredited by SACS.
|
You are exactly right. I apologize. I meant to say they are the first to be accreditied by the Southern Association of Schools...what ever that might be. Nevertheless, they are the first.

...many, many schools in Alabama have been accredited for years. Not sure what they'd be the first for...but not that.

Well, according to the Alex City Board of education, they have been the first CITY schools system in the United States to be accrediated by SACS.

Can I please clarify this for everybody... The Alexander City School System was the first school system in the nation to do SYSTEM WIDE Accreditation. Many schools throughout Alabama are accredited by SACS. Alex City was the first System to go through the process as a system and not individual schools. This is a great accomplishment for our system. Anyway, if you want to know who the best system in the area is, go to www.alsde.edu and look at the data. This is the Alabama State Department of Education website. If you want a first hand look, school tours are available. A child's education is one of the most important factors in their success as an adult. Don't trust it with just anyone.

As a certified teacher in Georgia, I'm there with you on finding the right school. We, too, have owned at Lake Martin for 4 years; looking to move there full time.
