These were some of the highlights from CBS News tonight.
1. The House delegation was so large, it needed three military jets: two 737's and a Gulfstream Five. Up to 64 passengers -- travelling in luxurious comfort
2. Add Senators and staff, most of whom flew commercial, and we counted at least 101 Congress-related attendees. All for a summit that failed to deliver a global climate deal.
3. Three military jets at $57-hundred dollars an hour. ($5,740) Dozens flew commercial at up to two thousand dollars each.
4. More than 300 (321) hotel nights booked - the bulk at Copenhagen's five-star Marriott.
5. Meals add tens of thousands more.
6. And all those attendees who went to the summit rather than hooking up by teleconference? They produced enough climate-stunting carbon dioxide to fill 10,000 Olympic swimming pools. (40,500 tonnes/source: UN Framework Convention on Climate Change)
7. And that's not the half of it. But finding out more was a bit like trying to get the keys to Ft. Knox. Many referred us to Speaker Pelosi who wouldn't agree to an interview, give cost estimates or even tell us where they all stayed. Her office said it "will comply with disclosure requirements."
It is unreal that abuse of this is tolerated when we have 17% unemployment in this country. If this continues in 2010, look for a massive change in both the House and Senate. People are fed up with this administration.

That sure looks like too many and too much tax money being spent. I wonder if any Wing Nuts were part of the group?

It's called a "Congressional delegation (CODEL) and they do it all the time, both sides of the aisle. They arrive in a country, our Embassy then has to provide "support" to them, setting up appointments, shopping trips and whatever else they may need. It's more like a paid vacation, and nothing much ever seems to come out of it.

It is really a shame. It is wrong and should be changed no matter what or which party. it is a waste of our hard earned tax dollars ... especially in a difficult economy and massive budget deficits and the current leadership talking more and more taxes needed.

I agree. It's also an awful burden on the Embassy people, who have to shuttle them around, are responsible for their security, host dinners, etc. and our Embassy's are not really staffed for it. From what I've been told, most of the CODELs really expect to have their butts kissed and their every whim and desire arranged.
It wouldn't bother me so much if anything ever came out of it, but nothing ever does. Sometimes a question will trickle down, but not usually. And the Staffers and Departmental people spend weeks and weeks preparing papers and staff books for these trips, taking them away from doing their real work.
It's been going on for years and years, and no one ever seems to stop it.
