As some of you know the Corp of Engineers has turned over some of the camp ground management to Friends of Lake Ouachita. (aka FOLO) Right now they manage Crystal Springs and Thompkin's Bend Recreation Ares.  I have read FOLO's mission statement, but I am not real sure exactly what their function and management of those camp grounds is supposed to be. The Corp is still responsible for the up keep and patrolling the facilities.
May 14th through May 19th I was camped at Thompkin's Bend Recreation Area: area A, site number 10, my intentions were to stay through the 21st. I was told that the power was off in the camp ground, but would be restored by that afternoon. Every day I was told the power would be on by the afternoon. Power was partially restored in areas B,C,and D, but I did  not move because I was told each day power would be restore by the afternoon; of course that did not happen.  The weekend came and the power was still off. Of course the Corp was in charge of restoring the power, but as you know they only work from 8 to 4 daily and not on weekends. I broke camp and went home. Don't get me wrong, but I think these type repairs should be carried out by sub contactors not the Corp, there would be more incentive to get the job completed in a timely fashion. Granted the power lines in the park area are very old and in need of complete restoration. Very few people primitive camp anymore; like me they have camper which are basically a small home on wheels. It takes me about 5 to 6 hours to get my site set up, leveling the camper, hooking up power etc. When I break camp it is the reverse of the process plus some extra work storing equipment etc. Luckily I have a generator that will power my RV, but I can not run it after 10 PM.
We are paying for the power and the water through daily fees, $20 daily for those under 65 and $10 for seniors with Senior Passes.
Well I just had to voice my complaint, I doubt it will do much good; granted I am spoiled and want my A/C, but heck I am 68 years old and sleeping on the ground is for the young, not us old timers.

Well, what a week, got run out of the camp ground yesterday ( June 1) because of rising water.  Area B had been closed because of rising water and water was at the picnic table bases. We were in area D and the lake had just reached the edge of the pavement as everyone was getting out. Suddenly a large white oak tree fell across the road blocking our exit.Luck my cuz's neighbor came down with a chainsaw and cut us a path through the  fallen tree. We were told that the entire campground would be closed by this morning, Sunday June 2.
The lake has risen 8.78 feet sense Thursday and was still rising, Corp said the lake would come up anther 3 feet before they started letting water out. Looks like the final pool will be about 589+ that will be 11 feet above normal pool of 578.
Not only did we have rising water but a black bear had invaded the campgrounds and had been seen forging around the bathhouse. AGF had set a trap for the bear, but as of yesterday no luck catching the rascal.
What a way to end my spring camping.
