I have a lake lot on the east side with an older house and shed.  I am looking for a contractor to tear down and remove the old buildings and build a new house on the lot.  Recommendations appreciated!

We did the same a few years back. Our contractor, Wade Wilmouth, with whom we were very satisfied, said he will no longer build in Tallapoosa County after all the crap we had to put up with but he did make a great suggestion. We donated the house to our local fire department who burned it to the ground as a training exercise. We save about $10K in land fill costs and also got a tax break for the donation.

How long ago has that been?  I'm curious because a fellow told me a while back they won't do that anymore due to incurance and liabillity.  I am curious to know if they will or not.

Why don't you just call the fire department and post the answer?

We donated our cabin to the Fire Department when we were getting ready to build in Coosa County.  But I have also heard they don't do it anymore.

Dean Construction just built a large home in our slough.  I can't attest to their quality, but I can attest that they were there with a good sized crew every day, and sometimes worked on Saturdays.

there are specific rules to follow if the FD burns your house( AS A TRAINING EXERCISE ) and you want a tax break--YOU MUST: obtain an independent appraisal BEFORE THE BURN-go to IRS web site & get forms for FD to fill out before & after--I did this in 2007 & got a huge tax deduction; a friend asked me 3 years later how to do it & I told him the same im telling you --but guess what ? he forgot to order the appraisal before the burn ! NO TAX BREAK; AS TO A CONTRACTOR, IF THEY TELL YOU THEY ARENT BOOKED UP FOR A YEAR, I'D BE VERY LEARY !

Yes, I remember us having to get the independent appraisal and fill out tax forms.

We actuallly donated ours to a neighbor who was living in an RV at the time. Ours was easy to move as it wasn't going far, and was a simple 1400 sf Jim Walter type of house built in '87. Still had some miles in it; we just needed something bigger with all the grands.  No tax write off, but nothing went to the landfill, either. Saved both our neighbor and us some money so it was a win-win kinda thing. This was not an original idea of mine as I had a friend who did something similiar.

Kenny Mcbride is supposedly the best around the lake. I don't personally know him but if you are interested, I can try to get his number for you.
