According to APCOs lakes website - lakes.alabamapower.com - the lake is currently approaching 513ft MSL. (512.96 Feet). Don't know how the level on this site get's updated, but it isn't current at the moment.
Estimates are a peak of 515.5 but we'll see. The lake rose over 8 feet in the last 24 hours. I understand that when it reaches this level and still rising APCO goes into 'flood control mode' and releases are governed by a set of rules written but the feds.
Problem with just dumping it out is that there is a lot of flooding downstream already. Dumping Smith to make room for more and prevent a breech of the dam would cause major problems downstream.
I'm sure the thousands of people who live along the river downstream are thankful there was room in the reservoir to hold all of this potentially harmful flood water. ;-)

I do hope that some will now begin to understand the function of the lake. There has been some serious flooding downstream even with the gate closed at the dam.
|
From this, I do have a question. Is the dam pulling water now, or in the Winter time. I truly don't know well enough about when the water is pulled.

Bill I'm surprised you don't use your same logic about the people downstream as you do with people who bought seasonal lots. Why don't you just say that the people that bought downstream knew that flooding could happen, fact is you seem to care more for what happens downstream than you do about what happens on the lake itself. Fact is the water did rise rapidly, but the shoreline widens more and more as the lake fills that it would take alot more rain to ever reach a level of 522. Besides the last draw down that APC did lowered the lake approx. 4ft. and the people downstream did not flood. And one more thought what did the people downstream do before the dam was built.when all the water went downstream and none was held back? Did they get flooded then? I will admit I'm not as familiar with the run-off downstream only that Gorgas is the main source of the lake drying up every year, not the drought.

I grew up in Cordova before Smith Dam was constructed and I can assure you that the downtown streets of Cordova was often severly flooded. It is my understanding that since the dam was constructed that has not happened again. In regard to the recent lowering of the lake, if no other water from run off is flowing into the Black Warrior then it can handle a fairly rapid draw down on Smith Lake. I can only guess what it would have been yesterday when areas around Jasper and Cordova was flooding if another six feet over the area of Smith lake was also flowing into the area.

Thanks for the info on that but can someone explain how the lake can be 513 at 9:00 p. m. Jan. 7 and then be 508.85 at 10:00 p.m. Jan 7 those people downstream must be in big trouble or APC exaggerated the rise of the lake. I have not been down there but I am going first thing in the morning to see which level was true.

I don't have a clue what APCO's telephone message is doing. It is definitely WRONG. witin two hours it was reporting dropping from 513.3 down to 508.65... I can assure you that at 11 p.m. the water level was at least 513.... I left the lake at 5 pm, @ 513.3 came back shortly after 11pm and the water was at lest 6" higher. I came through Sipsey and the water was over the parking lot by the bridge at the intersection going to Sumiton... sorry I don't know the name of that road. Hull Road on the Sumiton end.

Hey LOCO, maybe if you would have opted to buy a "Year-round" lot versus a seasonal lot, you wouldn't be complaining... Though I would rather have a more stable level, I'm also aware of the reasons for the dam/lake, and it's run accordingly to government regulations. Of course, I'm sure you're one of those that think our government is part of the New World Order and you're hoarding thousands of rounds of 223 ammunition for the day of reckoning! Get a life dude...

Ivan for your info I have a year round lot and I don't recall complaining but I understand now that you must be one of the idiots that regulate the water levels or maybe you were just the idiot that was responsible for putting the wrong info on the phone message as well as the web site . And just in case you were not , your still an idiot.

LoCo what high school do you attend? How can you afford a lake house being just 18 yrs old? You are either just a kid or extremely immature. How about keeping your name calling on the playground and off this forum. By the way, Bill (who I have never met) is correct with most or all of his logic trail regarding APC, water levels, SLISA, impacts of droughts, flood control, etc. Please let us all see your proposed letter to the customers of APC who may have to pay higher rates to provide you more water during mid Summer, which is usually a high power period (and as a consequence requires higher water draws thru the dam). And yes, we all know about the cooling tower issue. In your letter, you can explain why these same APC customers should pay for cooling towers so you can enjoy more water at your lake house. I'm sure they will be very happy to fork over these big bucks as they visualize you and your friends floating leisurely (beer in hand) at your swim dock. I'm over and out.

Tubeman I did not start the name calling but I don't mind turning the tables you can side with whom ever you wish, whether it's Bill or SLISA truth is both sides have some valid points however I believe SLISA, to which I'm not a member of, makes a better case for everyone on the lake including both year round water or seasonal water. But you and your pouting buddy's will never open your little minds up to see the whole picture. So there really is no reason to try to convince you of anything. So crawl back under the rock you came from and let the ones who want to improve the quality of all not a select few do there work.
