If this foreign coal company even has the slightest idea they can get P-3939 passed, they have all literally lost their minds.

In my opinion, there is absolutely no way the Cullman County Commission will allow:
1. the $219 million dollars benefit to be disrupted (brought in by the lake)
2. the $5.8 Million per year revenue to Cullman, Walker, and Winston Counties to be eliminated
3. the $88 million revenue to local businesses around/ on the lake per year to be eliminated

Also, if the proposal considered right now to the FERC to hold the lake level at 502 msl year round continues, it has been estimated to increase property values on the lake by $.5 BILLION.

I hope that most all of you would agree with me on this matter. After all, it is the quality of our beautiful lake that is the most important to us all.

Your thought process is straight on. The only problem is that historically city and county governments around Smith Lake have been silent when significant issues were being discussed which impacted Smith Lake.

For example, when attempts were made to get APC to follow the rule curve for water level management, city and county governments and local legislators were nowhere to be found. This movement was driven by property owners interested in protecting their property and having reasonable water level for recreation during the summer months.

Property owners suffered major damages due to docks and boats sitting on the ground. All this was preventable if APC had included cooling towers as part of the original project. Smith Lake was developed initially for hydro power generation and later was designated as a large cooling water source for Gorgas in lieu of capital expenditures for cooling towers.

Many APC supporters only wanted to talk about seasonal property owners and defended APC with statements that "APC owned Smith Lake and they were free to do what they wanted". Others now will say that property owners can allow strip mining on their property and that is the individual land owners business.

The dollars that are quoted above existed then. So why is there an outcry when strip mining is discussed? Strip mining disrupts the surface appearance and creates potential run offs that can damage lake water quality. Dropping the level from 510 to 492 feet is also dangerous from safety, financial, and environmental perspectives.

I totally agree on the cooling towers. I would not even mind if my bill went up slightly just to solve it.

Yet, I'm hoping people find the subject to be much more extreme than the water level. Low water level is better than no clean water or no water at all right?

Having 510 feet of polluted water with signs on the bank "swimming not allowed" is an absolute worse case.

I could not even agree more.
