I will try to rant without profanity.

Who are these people and who gave them a boat license?

I waited until 645pm Sunday night to ski. Most of the boats were gone and the wind had died down. Having skied a good distance I stopped for a breather. I was in the water and my neighbor was in the boat. Two guys on a jet ski came screaming around the point, came with 20 feet of the boat and made a sharp turn to spray the boat with a sheet of water, laughing and screaming as they zoomed off. Just in case those two nimrods happen to be reading here - you are why I hate jet skis. And by the way, just in case you missed this part of the boat drivers test - this action is specifically addressed and it's called reckless driving. This also applies to skiers who go too close to piers or boats and spray people.

Monday morning - I went skiing before coming home. Just a few bass boats out on the lake. I was skiing just beyond Powell's Hideaway and 2 guys in a bass boat were just sitting there. The driver waited until we were just abreast of him and then he gunned it. He was between us and the shore maybe 30 feet away from me. Instead of going behind us, he passed on the right and then crossed in front of us. Just in case that nimrod happens to be reading here – did you read the section of the boat driving law about right of way? Or maybe you’re just stupid in addition to being rude and inconsiderate. I hope your tiny brain was able to verbalize the words that went along with the bird I shot you (as$%#le!).

Y’all are looking forward to summer and I am absolutely dreading it. I know people like this are out there all year long but warm weather brings them out in droves. I hate having to share the lake with rude, inconsiderate scofflaws.

If the marine police need more money for a greater presence on our waterways I have a suggestion. Tax boat tags more like car tags. That should bring in some cash.

OK. That’s all. I feel much better now.

Or they could give tickets to folks doing such things. That ought to raise a bunch of revenue. But instead, they are busy stopping folks out for a nice family cruise and giving tickets for the slightest infraction they can find and scaring the crap out of kids.

I agree with you. And nice job on ranting without too much profanity.

Peace,

I'm surprised the water patrol wasn't around... they seemed to follow me, my wife, and my kids all day Sunday. Seems like every time I looked around, they were there watching us in case we decided to break the law. They were highly visible until we came up on a stranded cabin cruiser, then they somehow vanished. I pulled this huge boat with a 19' ski boat because they evidently didn't want to be bothered. The water patrol sees what they want to see, and turn their heads if they don't want to actually work. Sorry, I forgot this was your rant.

RBS - You do not feel better, you could rat all afternoon........ I know i could,,,,, just like every roadway we travel (or waterway) there are people that just do not respect the laws and other people around them. Every weekend I bet everyoe leaves with a storysimilar to yours. people just dont respect each other or other peoples property.

RBS let it out, you know your not finished.......

John, I know why the water patro.l follows you,,,,,its your posse you ride wit........ Dangerous crowd.

I know you want to! This can be a group rant. Any and all ranters welcome (as long as you aren't the driver of the offending jet ski or bass boat - there's nothing you could say to make me think y'all are any less than the morons your actions prove you to be).

As for being pulled over for the random check - been there done that and they didn't give me a t-shirt. After I start pulling out my whistle, skier down flag, insurance papers, title, fire extinguisher and bajillion extra life preservers they start going OK OK OK never mind. I always (this has happened more than once of course) tell them how much I appreciate what they do. And I sincerely mean that. It's just too big a lake with too few people patrolling. They've always had a "reason" to pull me over but I've never gotten a ticket. ("m’am, the reason we stopped you is because we couldn't see that HUGE competition sized, legal rear view mirror and we could see you didn't have a spotter" or "mam, did you see that "no ski zone" buoy over there? Why yes, officer, I did. But we aren't skiing - this ski rope just flew out of the boat all by itself. The wind ya know. And by the way here are my whistle, skier down flag, insurance papers, title, fire extinguisher and bajillion extra life preservers. Have a nice day!")

RBS - I have met you, you know they are pulling you over because you look good and its the only way they can start a conversation.....haha......

I have never got a t shirt either, whats up with that? I also always keep a bottle of water handy for whoever has to bug me,,,,,,,,

Steve, you're right about my posse - they're definately dangerous. Somehow they are able to make off with hundreds of dollars at a time. Until the water patrol began watching them, I thought I was the only victim!

As for the dangerous boaters out there... sooner or later they will get what's coming to them. We just have to pray they don't take innocent victims with them. Be safe.

John

Why thank you Movin. You are too kind to an old lady.

When I said they didn't give me a t-shirt - I should have said what they have given me in the past. Really and truly.

Coupons for free fries at McDonald's for the kids. A really cool key chain with a waterproof pouch attached that your drivers license will fit into for me. The key chain was last year (when I was stopped in the no ski zone). The McD's coupons were a few years ago..well, maybe more than a few. My kids were young enough to think it was neat. At 17 and 19 they'd rather have the key chain now. As far as that goes, they'd better not be doing anything to get pulled over to even be offered a key chain.

Next time they pull y'all over - no matter what for - tell 'em what a great job they're doing and how much you appreciate what they do. And oh by the way - Y'all got any key chains or coupons for french fries for the kiddies? Those coupons'd sure be helpful trying to get them to come out from hiding under the bow.

All joking aside. I honestly appreciate the marine police. If I ever do get a ticket (and I know someday that's just BOUND to happen) I'm sure I'll be PO'd but I'll still tell them I'm glad they're there.

And all of this had made me think I need to check my fire extinguisher to be sure it's still good. I found out that they aren't good forever - during one of those little inspection stops.

We are fairly new to Logan Martin. I have been reading the forum for over a year now but I felt moved to sign up to respond to this topic. While we are ranting, I would like to bring up the subject of people who go too fast in a slough. I know we don't have a no wake sign but we have had our floating dock repaired two times in less than a year thanks to the people who seem to wait until they get to our dock and then take off as fast as they can thereby creating a big wake which slams against our dock. The primary offenders are fishermen who I thought should know better. The interesting thing is they love to fish by our dock which is known by many to be a prime fishing location but then they disrespect our dock when they leave. I am new to this lake thing having never lived on the lake before so maybe I am asking too much for them to go by our dock slowly...

Cricket, welcome to the board......

Have you looked for a "No Wake Zone" sign? I would put one up off of my pier so that at least they can see it.

We are in the back of the slough and when we first got our place our kids would run pretty fast from our pier to the main channel on the seadoos. all it took was a neighbor asking me not to before i realized it bothered someone else and now anyone that rides it is the first thing we tell them, slow till you get to the open water.

Not eveyone pays attention to signs but most will see it and at least be aware that you have a problem with it. And if you add "Please" behind a customized sign then you might have a right to be angry if they continue.

What part of the lake are you on?

We are on the Talladega side in Country Club Estates at the beginning of the slough. I like your idea of the sign. I may do that this weekend. I have been tempted to ask the fisherman at our dock to wait until they pass our dock before gunning it. I think I may start saying something since it might make a difference. Thanks for the input.

We have the very same problem. With us its either Jet ski's or bass boats. We live in a very narrow slough , it seems just plain old common sense would prevail. I asked my neighbor at the beginning of the slough about putting a no wake sign at his dock, he refused . I talked to the water patrol once, they said they would watch it. But to be fair with only a couple of water patrol boats on the lake they dont have time to sit at my slough. And if they are there watching I doubt the boats will be speeding in and out of there. So depending on the mood Im in at the time I either yell at them , or go down and make sure my boat isnt washed up on the dock.

I am surprised your neighbor said no to posting the sign. I think we could all enjoy the lake more if we were considerate of each other. I do have some trouble with jet skis flying by but the fishermen do it more and all year long. The people we bought the house from put Christmas trees at the bottom of the lake all around the dock for the fishermen so you would think they would help us out with the wakes after fishing at our dock.

Talking to the fishermen will help on a repeat fisher but the sign gets noticed by all.

I would look over the internet for an attractive sign not the law enforcement kind. That shows its yours and you are asking to respect your property.

Good Luck!

Subject:   Proposed 100 Ft Regulation
Date:   4/23/2008 1:01:46 PM

Just an FYI, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for which the Marine Police is a division is proposing adopting the following reg regarding idle speed, on all Alabama waterways (Lake and Rivers). This reg is very similar to those of the State of Georgia and numerous other lakes throughout the US.

STATE OF ALABAMA REGULATION 2008-MP-1
(Marine Police)
MONTGOMERY COUNTY

By authority vested in me as Commissioner of Conservation and Natural Resources of the State of Alabama as provided for by §33-5-62, Code of Alabama 1975, I do hereby establish, proclaim and promulgate the following regulation, which has the force and effect of law:

Section 1. Rule 220-6-.60, entitled "One Hundred Foot Restriction” is hereby adopted, to read as follows:

“220-6-.60 One Hundred Foot Restriction

(a) No person shall operate any vessel or tow a person or persons on water skis, an aquaplane, a surfboard, or any similar device on the waters of this state at a speed greater than idle speed within 100 feet of any vessel which is moored, anchored, or adrift outside normal traffic channels, or any wharf, dock, pier, piling, bridge structure or abutment, person in the water, or shoreline adjacent to a full-time or part-time residence, public park, public beach, public swimming area, marina, restaurant, or other public use area. The above restriction shall not apply to the intercoastal waterway or to ocean-going ships or to tugboats or other powered vessels which are assisting ocean-going ships during transit or during docking or undocking maneuvers.

(b) Any person violating any of the provisions of this regulation shall be punished as provided by §33-5-62, Code of Alabama 1975.”

Section 2. This regulation shall become effective on the 36th day after adoption and filing with the Legislative Reference Service.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of my office to be affixed in the City of Montgomery on this the ________ day of _______________________, 2008.

Chief, I think we all agree that the Marine Police serve a great purpose. But just like driving around Bham and seeing kids wreckless driving, babies in adults front seat laps, and just plain irresponsible behaviour its aggravating.

To me I go out of my way to be responsible, especially when my kids are around me and when I see others that are blatently abusing their privilage to operate a water toy and see them every weekend oblivious to others and the rules of the water and it seems they never are stopped.

What the MP and you do is a thankless job most of us will never fully appreciate. I personally would like to thank you and hope to get to meet you someday.

I think I read or at least glanced over all these post and the responces. Pardon me if I missed something but I would be remiss if I failed to ask my question.
Am I the only one here posting who ever saw a person running a SKI BOAT ACTING DANGEROUSLY?

One fine example was a few years ago as we were teaching my youngest daughter to ski. My brother inlaw was in the water with her and I was driving our boat when a guy pulling a skier ran behind my boat between it and my people who were in the water. He managed to cut the ski rope approx 6 feet behind us resulting in snatching the rope from my daughters hands and wrapping it around his own prop. That stopped him and he and I had words,,,,,,,,SERIOUS WORDS !

Perhaps I shouldnt mention the ski boat that cut so close behind me while I was trolling from the pontoon boat that he cut both my lines.

Or maybe I shouldnt mention the one who as I was loading a friends boat on the trailer last year who came so close that he almost washed the boat from the trailer as I drove it on.

Jet skis! They should be illegal. Ive had several instances where I have almost been rammed by them.

Yes, there are many idiots on the water and they operate ALL forms of crafts but lets be fair and cover all of them if we are going to breach the subject.

I fish and love to doit. My old bass boat gives me the best ride at about 35 MPH and I frankly never saw any need to run 70+ to catch a fish although I admit that in my younger days it was fun to go fast.

Before I leave I will hope that the ski boat driver who saw fit to pull his skier between me and the bank one early morning as I was tossing a buzz bait is reading this and wont do that again.

Have a nice day

Nope, your not , I have seen ski boats, jet ski's , bass boats. pontoon boats , almost everything except maybe paddle boats, I think they have a right to act nuts with all that paddleing they do, looks like alot of work to me. Heck , once I was bass fishing and had a duck fly right over the boat between me and the back of the boat. Now that was scarey.
