I can't help it. It needs to be said. I understand that it is difficult for several of you to believe but the proposed bill would be the first step in saving this lake from becoming another Lake Lanier. At this time there are probably a lot less than 25 owners of boats longer than 30' 6" with hp exceeding 500 using Lake Martin. Y'all aren't causing a big problem. Yet.
Looking back ten years there were, perhaps, a half dozen on this lake. It wouldn't take ten more years before the number rises to 100. The giant sucking sound then will be the joy that will have been taken from the 99% of folks who operate boats and pwc's that don't reach those lengths or hp's.
I won't feel any joy if you lose your right. But, IF it passes I'll feel great joy for the other 99% and for the thousands of property owners on this wonderful lake.

Great post Carnac.. Things to consider:
1. Why is the law necessary. Because those the law is directed at brought it on themselves. You must be responsible for your own actions or the law will hold you responsible. 99% of the lake residents don't like loud, fast boats.
2. The bill is directed at non-navigable lakes because the Corps of Engineers makes the rules on navigable rivers and lakes.
3. Full time residents of boats dump raw sewage overboard--yes, there are pump out station in a couple of places, but don't fool yourself into thinking full time or even weekend residents use them.
4. Loud, fast boats are designed and built for open sea, not for lakes. Want to go fast, get a bass boat.
5. Don't need lobbyist or big money to influence this bill; just the 99% who favor it.

I love the offshore boats,no doubt about it. But the bottom line is they have no place on a land locked Lake, they are designed for the Ocean, that is why they are call offshore..

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it passed...though personally I would expect there be some amendment on the length. Some of the Marinas with lots of big boats that never go out are going to get crushed with that loss of revenue.
Outside of the guys with really big, fast boats (or that have friends with big, fast boats) and the Marina owners...who would really complain?
While there are probably some resales in this area...are their really any new boat dealerships in this area that deal in the 500+ hp boats...maybe some in Mobile...but I am not seeing a major sales tax hit either.

Sorry--But you need to ride by all the marinas and look in the wet slips--Lots of boats over 30ft.

I do not think it is length, but H.P. A 30 ft. Sea Ray with a 454 300 H.P. may go 40 MPH tops. A 32 Ft. FastTech w/2 -500 HP Engines probley 100 MPH plus, and has no place on a land locked body of water.

So you think, so its OK for a elderly grandmother who has never taken the boating exam and was "grandfathered in" to operate any boat say a pontoon not on plane making 4 foot waves.........it's not so bad my butt.

If I never put it off-shore so then it's not off-shore......it's in-shore and soon I can't buy a 32 foot Air-Stream trailor to pull behind a Dodge Ram with a Hemi because it has 350+ horsepower..........people are nuts.

I do not belive I have ever seen a pontoon boat make a 4 ft wake,either on or off plane, A 29 FT. Fountain with a 500 HP 502, should be enough boat for Martin. 80+ MPH.

Bass boats are for fishing ID-10-T but they still run 80+, very deadly with with only 225 hp. Just because you have 32 feet , 2 engines & 750+ hp does not mean you will be using it all the time. Petro is expensive my man. But when you got it you got and as my friend in NC said.....we gonna bewingit.

As someone that reads the forum regularly and posts infrequently I have to chime in. What is the legislature thinking? This must be someone's pet project motivated by a personal experience - or an axe to grind. I live on the lake full time and my boat is under 23' but I certainly agree that the power crowd pays attention, is well prepared and from what I have seen, drives straight up the middle. I support them getting their rush for speed and doing what they choose. Count me among the vocal 1%

All 1% 'ers unite for the common good to show the less mentally skillful that lack focus how to work it and allow them to pull themselves up by the bootstraps so that one day they may say, I DID IT BY GOD, I LEARNED . Show me one powerboater who is trouble and I dare say you 99%'ers you would have 50 who are more so. Powerboaters respect the equipment for what it can do while a larger percentage of 99%'ers could care less to think about respecting their equipment since it's not so overpowering until they get in trouble and panic causing more problems. Half of you don't know the "rules of the road" or don't see fit to use them. Bunch of ID-10T's.
