I have seen an abundance of open muscle shells as the lake has receded. I initally thought that these shells in more shallow water resulted from birds feeding on them. However, as more lake bottom is exposed there seems to be more open shells. Can someone expalin why so many shells and what is feeding on them? In the same vein, I have never seen a live muscle in the lake....................explain please!!!!!

We live near Dennis Creek and my wife and I began to notice muscle shells on the pontoons of our boat. After about a week we tried to use the pontoon but it wouldn't run. After closer inspection we discovered that the fuel line, depth finder cable, and most of the wiring between the motor and boat was gone. The marina came to the rescue and told us Muskrats had gotten to our boat. After $1,450.00 and weeks of waiting the repairs are complete and the boat will again be usable. Anyone have any hints on how to rid the boat of Muskrat damage other than a gun as with my aim I would probably miss and blow a hole in the pontoon. We are one of the fortunate ones with year round water, even through the drought and I guess that aids to the Muskrats attraction.
Any ideas.

You might try some sort of high frequency pest control device.
..... or better yet, blast some AC/DC and Aerosmith at the boat/dock for a couple of minutes every hour; then again, that may cause the neighbors to start shooting at you.

I have heard about Muskrats eating the wax impregnated shaft seals of inboards causing the boat to sink... What kind of luck is that?

Thanks for the info, we have to do something. This is the first problem we have had and hopefully the last. There is another pontoon at the marina with the same problem. This boat is from the south end of the lake. I will give some of the ideas/suggestions in the article a try. Thanks again.

The quickest and easiest solution is to encase your cables in stainless steel or aluminium tubing.

Just because the boat was repaired doesn't mean that it will not happen again. I recommend that you put split conduit around all rubber cables, tubes, etc. that are near or in the water to prevent this from happening again. Radio Shack carries split conduit in a few different diameters.

Thanks for the tips. The marina recommended a metal sheathing that comes from a marine supply and they installed it along with the new wiring etc.. Friend of mine suggested moth balls hung in cheese cloth in the motor well but I never heard of this before.

Yes, we did.. We were very pleased with the contractor and the appearance of the retaining wall. Two Lake Homes across from us also put in GeoStone seawalls at about the same time. The two owner's did it themself with the assistance of a couple of friends, and their seawalls look great.
I personally think the appearance is far superior to concrete walls. The color GeoStone we used is complimentary to the colors of the stone we have around the basement and pillars of our Lake house.

No. The conduit is split so the tupe is a flexible "C" section that opens up to install then snaps closed.
