Figured I would try here, to see if anyone else has had any similar issues.
I have a Garmin 498 that is connected to my sonar and gps antenna. Everything seems to work fine, except the backlight. When I first power the unit on, the backlight comes on momentarily, then goes dark, and the unit continues to run. I have made sure the auto-backlight setting is off, and I have reset the unit to factory specs (per what I found on some other fishing forums). Any ideas, aside from replacing the unit?

IS this the one we just repaired wiring on? If so, I will ask Earl when he comes in this morning. He is the guru that worked out the wiring issue. Steve

You can always get one of those lights that you put on your forehead, maybe the constabulary would not pull you for running docking lights... I don't see where it it would be an external connection - there is not a "light" wire, just + and - 12 volts.
http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/1068_OwnersManual.pdf - page 4 shows what is SUPPOSED to work...

Yea, this is the one I brought to you that you repaired previously. Being that the wiring issues kept everything from working properly, I didn't know anything about this unit's backlight issue.

I ask him, he said he could not figure it out either. Call the Lake Store. He has a suggestion. 256-825-3388

Do you do that by unplugging it, waiting ten seconds then pluging it back in, or do you have to hold it upside down and shake it?

Since this Garmin has a backlit "TFT" liquid crystal display (exactly the same as a laptop PC) with a "CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent light), I would suspect that the 'inverter' that powers the CCFL is failing after starting up. Could be the CCFL itself, too. I've had them go bad in laptop PC displays and act exactly the same way.
Because these displays need to work in pretty bright light, they drive the CCFL pretty hard, and I would not be surprised if it has died. If it is just the CCFL, they normally cost about $10 or so (part cost). Same for the inverter, but it may be a bit more difficult to find a replacement part.
