Maine Highlands Region
With fifty waterfalls and four hundred magical miles of shoreline that offer you a pristine view of Moosehead Lake, there?s so much to discover in The Maine Highlands region.
A visit to the Highlands would be incomplete without exploring Baxter State Park. The pristine and majestic park spans 200,000 acres and is home to Mount Katahdin, the so-called ?mountain of the people of Maine.? The highest point in the state, she rises up towards the heavens at a grand 5,267 feet, gifting her visitors with unparalleled views, uncompromised vistas and the kind of peace that only comes with soaring altitudes.
Baxter State Park houses many well-kept secrets, and one of the best is the beginning or end (depending upon your perspective) of the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail. The trail is one of America?s finest treasures, rich in history and begging to be explored. The final stretch of the trail from Monson to Mount Katahdin is sometimes called "The Hundred Mile Wilderness."
A trip into Bangor offers a vibrant downtown, eclectic restaurants, boutique shopping, a bustling casino, outdoor concerts and the chance to catch a glimpse of resident author Stephen King. It?s a city with a rich timber history (evidenced by the 31-foot-tall Paul Bunyan statue presiding over the waterfront) and a flourishing arts and culture scene.
An hour and a half from Bangor is Moosehead Lake. True to its name, the Moosehead Lake area boasts some of the finest moose watching in the country. Moosehead is Maine?s largest lake and a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Gaining popularity at the end of the last century, the area continues to be a place whose hospitality is rivaled only by its beauty. Annual festivals in Moosehead Lake run the gamut from Moosemania in the spring to Snowfest in the winter featuring a 100-mile sled dog race.
